View Full Version : The Ropers or Mr. Firley

As usual, I'm up in the early morning hours watching Nick at Night and scanning the 2+2 site.

Tonight, Mr. Firley made his debut on Three's Company and it occured to me how much more I liked the episodes with Mr. Firley rather than the Ropers. The Ropers, especially Mr. Roper, were usually just taking up valuable time whereas Firley could be hilarious.

Anybody else have a preference?

By the way, they played poker in one of tonight's episodes in case you thought this topic was completely irrelevent to the 2+2 site.

Mrs. Roper was a horny old slut.

I saw a porno movie once modeled after 3's Company...names were changed of course...(Jack was something like Jake)...same premise though...a guy with 2 girls (blonde and brunette)...I turned it off when Jake started making out with Mr. Farley.

TV Land sometimes does a theme night, i.e. tv show episodes that centered around Christmas, or guest stars, or episodes with a dream sequence or whatever.

I'd like to see a theme night with poker. They can show the Three's Company episode you're talking about; the Taxi episode where Louis' brother, the professional poker player, takes the cab drivers for all their money; the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy plays poker with Ricky, Fred, and pals; and the Happy Days episode where Richy and Potsie get taken by poker cheats.

(And yes, I do have too much free time)

TV likes to take anyone and think they can be funny. So you end up with sit-coms with un-funny people, like Norman Fell or Patrick Duffy. It's always much better when you have a person who is genuinely funny, like Don Knotts. Speaking of whom, incidentally, I've been watching the Andy Griffith Show lately. What a great show.

I liked it when Norman Fell would make fun of his wife and then turn and smile at the camera. I always wished there would be a camera there for me to smile at when I made fun of someone.

I think that they are both funny as hell. I too have been watching a lot of Nick at Night lately. I can't get enough of the 1-3am slot. Family Ties, Three's Company, and of course All in the Family. I just wish they would show episodes of the late 60's and early 70's versions of Dragnet again. That was another great show.

Anyway back to your question again- I have no preference, the crew of that show did an outstanding job as long as they were producing it.

I can't believe you guys didn't like Mr. Roper!

Those gloating looks at the camera after zinging somebody were the best "takes" this side of Jack Benny.

FWIW, I hear that Don Knotts was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. No snarling at autograph seekers from this guy.

saw a great scene on 'Spin City' once. the guys were playing poker (all 5-card draw) and dragged charlie sheen's character who protested because he had a gambling addiction, and didn't want to fan the flame, so to speak. he ends up going, and they cut to a scene where they're playing and the bets and raises are like a nickel apiece, or so. then (is it Charlie?) gets dealt 4 kings with an Ace, doesn't want to play it (hes been folding all night) and so draws 4 to his lone A. he ends up getting the other 3 aces. at this point they start complaining that hes not really playing, and is no fun. so he raises the pot (which must be like 20-50 cents max at this point) $100. the punch line is that the one guy who kind of takes the butt of the jokes a lot says, "I think you're bluffing" and calls him... funny scene. next day Charlie? is in his office on the phone with a bookie, pacing with a football game on and reading the race schedules at his desk.
