I used to use speakers, but recently I've been using headphones and have been able to concentrate better.

I don't listen to music at the computer, but just for listening to computer stuff I use speakers at home or headphones at work.

how much are a good pair of headphones?

the reason I ask is that my son mentioned he was going to buy some and I thought the cost was outrageous but then he said I was outrageous.

Headphones at work, speakers at home. The Sennheiser 280 Pros are diesel, worth every penny.

Headphones if I'm not alone.

I spent $250 on my Bose headphones. I know I'm going to catch flak for buying 'em, but they're very comfortable and I had to use headphones for 4-8 hours on a daily basis.

Speakers, but i am starting to lean towards headphones. The ones I have used in the past hurt my ears after a little while, but recently I have tried some good ones, and its pretty awesome.

YOU are outrageous /images/graemlins/tongue.gif. my computer is set up as such:
sound card optical out---->headroom microDAC--->portaphile v2 headphone amp--->modded sennheiser hd580s. that probably cost me like 700 bucks, however, it is WELL worth every penny.

Head phones only once in a while. Otherwise I've got the home stereo on for music.

Speakers, I don't like my girlfriend sneaking up on me, plus she gets mad when I'm 'ignoring' her.

I've spent a LOT on headphones and ended up realizing speakers were better. As such I have a pretty nice speaker set-up that I use exclusively.

okay so is $250 for headphones the norm or is that really extravagent because I have absolutely no idea. Like if you had a college-age son and he announced he was spending this much of his own money would you freak?

Thanks for any input.

Unless I plan on editing a symphony or something, I just can't imagine the need to spend $250 on headphones when there is plenty of selection and quality in the $50-$150 range. (http://shop1.outpost.com/category/Outpost/Electronicstab/Audio/Headphones/Noise+Canceling+Headphones/)

I have no desire for a 'cool factor'

Well, I'm that age and pay for everything myself but $250 is a bit extreme for the average consumer to spend on headphones. However, I'm happy with my headphones and get a lot of use out of them.

I agree with ThinMan and would look into something along the $50 - $150 range would probably be the most suitable. Right now the Sennheiser 485D's go for $75 on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007QN18K/ref=pd_luc_mri/002-2616022-7780809?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) .

Of course a headphone's sound quality is important but you may also consider other factors such as weight, comfort, design, portability, etc.

I found these forums to be rather helpful:
Head-Fi Forums (http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/index.php?)

while i agree with the headfi link(ive been a member there for about a year) and with the sennheiser promoting im not so down for the 485s. go to headphone.com and look at their reviews. they are ultra audiophile and very knowledgeable about everything headphone. enjoy!

well after I read thinman's comments I thought for sure I'd have to kick someone's ass for being extravagent. But you sound so nice and mature like someone I'd like to have for a son, and of course I know you own those fancy $250 headphones there so now I have to re-think the ass-kicking.

thanks for the link.

My desk is in the living room so i use headphones to block out people, t.v., and any other distractions. Plus i can crank them and no one cares. They are the Bose TP-1. Paid around $200 and they are sweet.
