View Full Version : Give me tips for making a blog

I've decided to track my progress in a more formal manner for family and friends, and have decided to enter the forsaken world of the blog.

As someone who has long chastised the splurging of personal feelings and thoughts through such an impersonal manner (says the hypocrite posting on an internet forum), I have missed the boat on what makes a good blog, what sites are better than others, etc.

Basically, any information to get me started, and then I can ask questions as I go.

So, first, is there a site better than others?

Thanks in advance,
SC

Nice. (but incredibly unhelpful).

Scott,
Blogspot is the easiest site to get a blog up and running. They have straight forward templates, etc. Not bad for a free site.

DON'T MAKE ONE!! There are already 10 worthless ones out there, why add yours to the mix?

Thanks for taking the time in responding.

However, I will also be seeking investors down the road and imagine it would be quite easy to supply a link with my poker success, when my mass email goes out, rather than explain every tournament I have won, how much I have made, etc.

I have no intentions of discussing how I enjoyed my breakfast, the crazy thing my dog did today, etc.

Instead, I imagine it will read more like:

2/18 won Party Super Thursday for 28k. Perhaps a discussion of a few key hands, and thats it.

I also imagine that this would help some of the relatives I have on the other coast, who here about my success, but don't have any day to day or even week to week updates.

I have a lazy factor that should be considered.

I'm also considering a web page, but don't know the difference really.

You know, a lot of people are down on blogs these days because they add personal touches, but lets be honest...the financial prospectus of a company preparing for an IPO is not that exciting to most people. What you are describing sounds like that to me.

Anyway, a blog is not going to be attractive to everyone. My own personal one is pretty much poker related, but I write it for people who know me and as a personal release, gets out frustration and allows me to share some joy (even if no one reads it, it provides the same thing a diary would or whatever). I often talk about how I did during a day but I am just as likely to post a poker related rant (ie - my latest post was about how much I hate Phil Laak and his stupid style).

Also, just a quick note about money amounts. A guy on here who posts on his blog as a pro player is vague with amounts, just incase the IRS comes looking. His official line is "incase I get the numbers wrong on the blog I don't want the tax guys thinking I cheated" so that may be something you want to think about /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I should say that I could really care less about what each individual thinks about blogs.

I am not asking anyone to read mine, only looking for tips on how to make them.

The previous respondent was correct in his assumption that ultimately whatever I create will be used as a self-advertisment when I come calling for money.

I use blogspot (my blog sucks, dont go looking it up and telling me trying to troll me or summit, i know it does).

Their templates are a good start, and once youve started getting into it you can upgrade them quite easily (requires a little html, but its largely just cut and paste from other parts of the template - its easy to work out).

You can use it for analysis, you can add a bit of personal in if you want, you can add some records of wins and losses if you want. Just write what comes naturally at the time, be honest and dont worry if no one reads you (im assuming this isnt a big deal for you but you never know).

Iggy (http://guinnessandpoker.blogspot.com) has a great site with almost all poker blogs linked up, my own (http://pokerdice.blogspot.com) has links to my favourite reads. Just go through them and see what others do, itll give you lots of good tips too.

I use blogger.com and think it's awesome. You can either create a blog at a blogger.com URL, or just use their platform to drop it onto your own domain. They also now support uploading pictures, and other good features.
as far as blogs in general, WTF do most people have against them? Your browser has a back button if you don't want to read about one individual's life. Back when i dropped out of law school to do the poker thing full time, it provided me with a pretty satisfying outlet to write about the ups and downs of everything, and i think provided other interested parties with a pretty interesting read from work, school, wherever.

That was the funniest unhelpful link ever. By the time I wandered over to his Cadbury surprize method of suicide, I was laughing so hard, I couldnt breathe.
