In your whole life, how much money have you spent on alcohol (old people, adjust for inflation)? Also, how old are you?

I am 23, and I estimate I am just above 5 figures

1K-5K

I am 38 and don't drink anymore.

I'd never thought about it in these terms before, but since you asked, my first impression was 20-50K and some rough math has borne that out. Scary.

It's closer to 20 than 50 though. That's good, right?

I'm 31 and spending less all the time.

High School: $100/month in Junior and Senior years (not counting beer bought and resold)= ~$2400

College: $200/month = ~$9600

Ages 22-32: Much harder. I'm going to average it at $1500/year, so that's $15,000.

I didn't even think about Spring break and 4 bachelor parties in Vegas where I spread the love, and I think I'm guessing low, so I'm adding a few thousand and calling it $35,000.

This is almost impossible to judge, but some rough math puts me at around 10k or so. I didn't adjust my rough weekly expenditure downwards for the time I've had kegerators, though, so it might be quite a bit less.

I was actually thinking about this the other day...$150-$200/month for the last 25 years averaged out. Somewhere in the $50K range

At least I stopped drinking at the bar and primarily drink just wine but these old grapes are still costing me a fortune.

Ten-twenty grand. 30 years old. I'm a cheap bastard I guess.

31, and well over 100K. I had a flat above a bar in London for a couple of years - I had one credit card I used just for running tabs in that bar. I know from the statements that I spent £17K (about $30K at current rate) in the second year alone (excluding drinking elsewhere). Probably more like $4-5K a year now, I guess. Easy come, easy go...

22 y/o... 10,000-20,000 I would guess. No way it's under 10k and I don't think I'm at 20k yet.

And I'm going to vegas and la next week and getting bottle service every night, so tack another grand onto what number I have.

I'm 36 so figure I've been a buying drinker for 18 years or so. 52 weeks in a year, figure $10-$15 week on average.

That weekly figure seems rather conservative unless you do all of your drinking at home. I really can't come up with a good figure. I obviously spent more in college, but even going out once a week is >$30. And I'm not much of a drinker.

It's an average over the 18 years. When I was younger and limited to the sixer I could get someone to buy for me, it was less. I've also gone through periods where I drank very little. And for a few years had jobs where my drinking was pretty much all subsidized.

Sweet.

I'd guess my weekly average is about $40. I'm 30, drinking really since 17, so just over $25K. I'd guess it's more, but that seems reasonable.

It was sweet. My buddy and I ran the "community relations" department of our Marine base. We took home "leftover" cases of beer and several bottles of liquor weekly for 30+ weeks of the year.

These scary big figures aren't an indication of us being drunken bastards (even though I'm sure that's true in many cases), they indicate that most alcohol is ridiculously overpriced.

It's really the man's fault. I mean, there is no earthly reason why a pint of beer should cost five bucks as it does in many bars at regular price.

I live in Hoboken and between drinking here and in NYC just in the last four years alone (I'm 22) I'd say I've spent over 5 grand.

I'm not really sure, I'm 19 and I've been drinking quite regularly since 13, but almost none of this has been at the massively high bar/pub prices they charge in London, it's mainly been alcohol bought off the shelf and shared with friends, and for a long time we just bought the cheapest vodka they sold so probably I've spent much less per unit than most people.

I've also done a lot of drinking of parents' and parents' friends' single malt whisky but haven't paid for very much of that except when buying gifts.

a WAY better question would be worded "how much, in dollars, has alcohol cost you?"

We had to do this in alcohol diversion class. It's astounding.

36, I put down 10-20k, but could be over 20k...no way under 10k.

been collecting single bottles of beers I've had over the last 6 years (since my wedding - coincidence???). Current collection > 400. Wife really loves that corner of the basement...

crap, now that I think about it, I gotta be over $20k...

I figure in the 25-30 grand range. Started drinking when I was fifteen. I am 41 now and hardley drink at all. Most of it spent in college and law school.

Did not drink before 17
17-21- went to a lot of bars, 2 nights a week on average, 50$ a night, for 4 years = 15,600$
21/22- Stopped going to bars, drank with friends at house= 200$/mo = 4800$
22/23- started going out to bars again, and spending even more than before, 3 nights a week- 50-70$ a night = 11,700$

32,100$. Wow. That is way more than I assumed. I will say that I am pretty liberal with buying rounds though.
