I have quite a few Russian and Ukrainian friends and they are great people.

Anyway, one couple I know was aquainted with this total babe (Lilia) who was courted and married by an American guy. We were all hanging out one day (her husband was working) and the attraction between us was just ridiculous. I speak a reasonable amount of Russian therefore making things all that much more fun (they like our accents, too).

Ultimately, she stayed faithful to the husband whom , frankly, I do not believe she truly loved. I was disappointed but happy for the dork she married as this said a lot about her character.

I would imagine the hotter the chick the more problems you are going to have (the aforementioned girl being a major exception). The former Soviet Union is becoming less third world all the time. There are plenty of guys over there with money, nowadays, so the US is becoming less appealling to them all the time.

I know of another guy (cab driver) who married this super hot cop chick from Moscow. I believe she has divorced him by now. From what I knew about the situation she was not too happy with the conditions he provided her with. Moscow, Kiev, St.Petersburg etc... are big, sophisticated cities. These women often have a warped view of what the United States is really like and wind up being pretty disappointed with life in Des Moines.

In conclusion, if somebody was seriously considering this, I would recommend finding a girl from a small, poor town. However, my primary suggestion would be to not mess with it.

The immigration process is brutal and you have no idea what they are REALLY all about. Are they just using you to get their papers so that, eventually, they can bring their mafia boyfriend over to clean you out?

While some women are looking to find rich husbands and Visas, many are looking for better life and love. I went to a few nightclubs in Kiev and the ratio was 5-1 women/men. Some women are looking abroad because the men there abuse alcohol and have many girlfriends.

As I understand it, the problem with Russia is the ratio of women to men. Also, the sterotype is that russian men aint the best husbands. The economy isnt great over there either and the corruption is unreal. I am actually from Europe and travelled to many Eastern European countries such as Russia (when it was still USSR), Romania, Tchechoslovakia, yougoslavia, Austria, Hungria...
so I do have an understanding of the Eastern European's mentality and I also remember vividly them loving us just because we were Westerners.
I am not saying the women are not beautiful because some of them are but do not make a statement about an entire population based on little knowledge you have.

I am not from this country... I definitely don't think looking for someone in other countries is wrong.
What is wrong is when women start websites just to marry american men to supposely have a better life. I wanted a better life, I came here, went to college and started working. I did not find the easy way out and try to marry someone just for that.

If the opinion is stated as being a definitive idea on the thing, sure.

I'm not sure anyone could ever agree on the number that would make it more valid. Personally, I'd say meeting people in different classes would be more telling, and after that, people in different areas.

I will put in that Russians are famous for having blocky, heavy body types -- that image of the square bodied, stocky Russian woman, once in a while leavened by the appearance of a hot superspy named Natasha -- has been way more prevalent, here in America and even more so elsewhere than the image of Russian women as super-cuties that seems to be circulating in OOT lately. My strong suspicion is the change has something to do with how many people are engaging in fantasies on those long lonely OOT nights.

Yup. It even makes people marry people they don't really love that much, just because they think there's something magical about marriage, or having kids, or a white picket fence.

You're still stuck with you though, whatever that is. No husband or wife is going to solve that "problem" for you or take away that unhappiness from you, if that's a problem. You'll just drag your unhappiness with you to a new situation, and sooner or later it will rear up its ugly head again.

I think getting married to make your life better when you're a poor person marrying to get out of an economic nightmare or hopeless situation makes that more true than marrying someone when you're not in desperate straits or don't have big considerations like that to deal with.

For lots of people who try it, it's kind of like, well, getting a new car or an ice cream cone will improve your life, too. For a while, for a little.

But it won't make a merely unhappy or poorly-adjusted person happy or well for long. It might just introduce a different type of crutch, but what's broken is still broken.

I'd hate to be the one person responsible for another person's happiness, or have my entire idea of happiness based on someone else and what they could do for me or with me. I think you have to be able to stand up and be whole on your own before you have all that much to give somebody else. Otherwise you could just be a clinging deadweight and pathetically needy.

A lot of people get along in relationships like that fine, for a while, though. But you often see them divorce quickly after the kids move out of the house, at best.

I just think you need other interests besides each other and/or the kids, and that while you should have a sense of unity and identity as a couple, you need a sense of identity of your own, and of your own separateness, too.

I think that's why a lot of wives wind up getting mad at their husbands and sometimes divorcing them. Just being a mom or wife, they have no adult sense of themselves outside of their relationship. You can only watch so much Oprah before going mad.

OK. I'd also say that, if you're a lonely man looking for cooking and companionship, $3000 and an eventual divorce is a bargain-basement price to pay for 5 years of such things. Or however long.

Yeah, it would be great if everyone married their one true love, and they stayed happy together while maintaining individual personalities and interests, and it would also be great if unicorns were real and I won the lottery tomorrow.

But the real world confronts everyone with practicalities. The man is lonely. He is willing to trade $x for x years of guaranteed companionship. The woman is poor. She is willing to trade x years of companionship for $x. One party may be happier than the other in the future, but both were happier than their former selves for the length of their relationship.

Yeah, I can see how it's worth it for some, or maybe the best they're going to get. And if they can get their little slice of the happiness pie, good for them.

As to the unicorn business of maintaining your own sense of self and having some sort of interests, besides the family, in life while being married, I don't think that's fantasy-land. I think it's fantasy-land to think your chances for a happy marriage are very good any other way. It's not the nature of marriage to solve personal problems. Going in weak doesn't make the weakness vanish, it just adds more weight to an already weak foundation. Then, you just have more people to visit that weakness on -- your kids, and partner. And this time, since it's more than just you involved, it's for much higher stakes.

It IS the nature of healthy human beings to want to grow and develop, to have interests and pursue them. It might be the nature of some sick ones to want nothing but stasis and the removal of threat. Those things might define sickness and health pretty well right there.

Personally, all other things being equal, I give a relationship with two people who both have strong goals and interests a better chance to last a long time and create a lot more happiness. I'd consider it a danger sign if a partner is satisfied just hanging around the house or raising the kids. Sooner or later, that's not going to be enough. Humans aren't built that way. Resentment will probably settle in, and if you're the focus of where happiness is supposed to come from, guess who will be held to blame?

I completely agree. We're kind of talking past each other. I meant that it was a fantasy to believe that that sort of relationship is attainable for everyone. While its definitely doable for some, if you're 40 and looking at Russian mail order brides, there's a decent chance that that will be a better option than holding out for your One True Love.

Oh yeah, definitely. I don't think finding your One True Love, whatever that could possibly be, is even a very realistic goal for anyone, young or old, rich or poor, and doubt married people necessarily have a huge leg up on the deal either.

Not to mention, your ideal partner at 18 could be very different from who you would want at 23, and both could be the opposite of what you want most at 30. Poor gal could be as perfect as the day you met, but life makes people change and grow apart and want different things. Staying together long term is a tough thing to work out, or even want to.
