View Full Version : WHY YOU SHOULDNT TIP IN A CASINO

08-16-2005, 11:20 AM
First off let me say I tip 20% everywhere outside of a casino. Resturants, bars, ect... Anyway, I decided in late 2002 that I would never tip again inside of a casino, yes that includes the casino resturants (out of spite). Why should I tip a BJ dealer when all they do is try to take my money, why the crap would I tip a poker dealer, did they help me win the pot? I dont think so. My luck or what little skill I have helped me when that pot. The point of this post is, if everyone quit tipping inside casinos, maybe this would teach them a lesson. We shouldnt have to tip you guys, you make an hourly wage a lot more than those poor waiters and waitresses or those hard workers at Mcdonalds. Have a great day and remember, "I DONT TIP"

1. I bet you never tip a McDonald's employee

2. The dealers are doing their jobs; the casino management wants your money. If no one tipped, the dealers would be paid more, but in paying dealers more, the rules would be tougher or the rake would be higher.

The only problem I'd have with tipping (not played in a live game yet) would be doing so for each pot I won. I'd rather have those chips in play until I left the game and then tip for the full session...

Does that make sense?

Perhaps I'm a cheap bastard as well, but I confess that I'm confused about why a place that makes a hundred kajillion dollars a day from the mathematically disabled needs me to tip dealers for them to make a decent living. Especially at a place like Foxwoods, where the tips go into a big pool to be split up amongst everyone.

I still tip when I go -- a buck every big pot, or every other pot, and if the waitress managed to get me my coke within fifteen minutes -- but that's about it. I was with a guy during my last trip that was a tipping madman, even tipping the chick who cashed him out at the cage. Bizarre.

And I tip ~20% at restaurants as well, sometimes much more at the cheapo places. (God forbid I should end up at someplace like Denny's, but if I do, and if the waitress is attentive, I don't see why she should only get 2 bucks on a 10 dollar bill, when some idiot waiter at a more expensive place can expect 10-15 bucks just by dragging me my food and showing up one extra time to refill my drink that's been empty for ten or fifteen minutes).

So you're not alone, bud. Something tells me those dealers aren't making $2.50/hr like most restaurant waitstaff.

Key word here is "expect". If I don't get my refill timely, they don't get a tip. That is my main criteria.

If I'm dining with company, I get a hard time if I tip anything less than 15%, even if service has been rotten. Pretty much they'd have to take a dump in the soup for me to get away with not tipping them at all. Another expectation I don't like.

I think the tipping system is great--it allows other people to pay a portion of the rake I would otherwise have to pay. Awesome.

I have the same experiences, except I vocalize my displeasure and tell them if they are so willing to compensate lousy service, to go right ahead, but I won't be a part of it. Usually the service has to really suck for me not to tip at least 15%.

Not sure how it is elsewhere...but BJ dealers in Tunica, Mississippi make an hourly 'wage' of only $5.50....and they make anywhere from $9-$18 per hour in tips (depending on what casino they work at).

I'm not sure what the hourly-wage is for poker-dealers in Tunica (who get to keep their own tips) but I very much doubt it is as much as they make in tips.

I believe that many McDonalds now pay $8-hour (that's what it says on some of their signs when they are 'Now Hiring').
Whereas the dealers wage is only $5.50.

I do agree that the casino should be paying their wages though and not me.
I continue to tip though because it's the social-norm and it's how it works in this country.

If the casinos had to pay the dealers $20/hour instead of $5.50 an hour (plus whatever the customers felt like giving them) then it would probably just come out of the rake or the comps or whatever.
I would still be okay with this way of them doing things...just pointing something out.

I believe that many casinos give their dealers the waitress minimum wage, which is (I think) $3.85 an hour.

I think waiters/waitresses make $2.13/hr at many places.

kid I know works at Chili's and says this is hourly salary.
He has to report how much he makes on tips for taxes (and probably doesn't report it all).
The tips come out of his hourly-wage of $2.13/hour and roughly evens out.
So every 2 weeks he gets a check for $0.00 (and they actually DO give him the physical check for 0.00...I asked).

Could be. I recall seeing three-something at an ice cream parlor here (New York). It must vary from state to state.

The last time I checked, even the restaurants were trying to get my money - so what's the difference between Outback Steakhouse getting it, or Harrah's? They all pay their help as little as possible, and tipping is the norm.........

not if the dealers don't split tips. Then your tipping the last dealer for all the dealerrr's hard work.

I am okay with not tipping for every pot. For a while I would just tip every dealer 2 bucks at the end of their round. I thought that that was fair. I am now back to tipping evry pot. I am not sure why.

I tip at the cage if I got a couple of loose chips.

I hate threads like this, and this will be my only response to it.

You are a jerk. There is no difference between tipping a poker dealer and a waitress. All she did was bring you your dinner and refill your drinks. You can make all the excuses you want for not tipping. It is my opinion it comes down to being a cheap and unpleasant person.

Many of us here have complained about the quality of the poker dealers in many casinos. If nobody tips, the quality of these dealers will erode even further. Put simply, you get what you pay for. It would be nice if casinos would pay dealers enough so tipping wasn't necessary. This isn't the case, and it isn't going to change anytime soon.

I want to be clear. I don't advocate overtipping, and I don't advocate tipping for poor service. That applies to my favorite eating establishment or casino. I really don't believe a fair tip for good service rendered is too much to ask.

Best wishes,

Fitz

If noone tipped in a casino, then the workers would take home less money. If they don't make a competitive wage, then they go work somewhere else. Those jobs then get filled by people who are willing to work for that lower wage amount. Odds are that those people either cannot get better paying jobs or for some reason love serving gamblers who don't tip.

Or, in order to keep good employees, the casinos increase the rake to replace missing tokes.

By the way, why do you tip 20% in a restaurant? Waiters are also only doing their job. They bring you the food whether or not you tip them. The restaurants they work in are also there to take your money. They give you food for your dollar and casinos give you entertainment.

In my view, tokes are a good way to reward a waitress for schlepping my drink from the bar, or the dealer for efficiently distributing the cards and running the game during their down.

Acording to your logic, you tip a waiter because he helps you eat the food. Does he chew it for you? Help you cut it like mommy did?

You don't tip because someone helped you perform a function, you tip because someone enhanced the experience or made a function easier. You tip a dealer because without them, you would be dealing the game yourself.

first off, i'm glad this guy got banned. second, a lot of people come into casinos and win a lot more than they lose by nothing more than dumb luck. sure, they could know the basic strategy of a table game or know which machines "are hitting", but they are usually in there to have a good time. i deal blackjack and i absolutely do not expect someone to tip me if they are losing, but if they are winning and play a $1 spot for me, i really do appreciate it and the players know that. it's called common decency.
