View Full Version : Question About Rakes

08-16-2005, 01:58 AM
I am new to poker, but I would like to know how much is a typical rake on a Limit Holdem game in a Vegas Casino? Say for example, on a 2-4 or 1-2 Limit Holdem game.

Is there a minimum? Is there a maximum? Is it a dollar or percentage amount?

I read on this forum someone saying, "pots that are large enough to be raked." This indicates there must be a minimum.

I don't need an exact answer, just an "well in general" answer will suffice.

Thank You In Advance.

Usually for most standard pots in 2-4 you will have 7 to all 10 players in the hand (not sarcasm very loose games)

And were I play in Chicago it is 10% of the pot, min 1 dollar, max 5 dollars) and no rake for chops of course.

No if you venture off into NL games the ones that I have played are generally timed rakes which means they take nothing from the pot but every time a new dealer comes (30 minutes) each player has to pay a set amount to the rake.

Hope this helps.

I can't speak to Vegas rakes, as I have never played there. In West Coast (i.e., WA and Southern CA) cardrooms, typical rake for 2/4 up through 10/20 is 10% of the pot, up to a max of $3. There is also usually $1 taken from each pot $10 and over for the jackpot pool (which eventually finds its way back to a lucky few players, rather than to the house).

Note that the rake is same for 2/4, 3/6, and 4/8 (as well as higher-limit games). Generally speaking (in my VERY limited recreational-player experience), the quality of average players at all these limits is about the same (that is to say, pretty soft games). So, all else being equal, the rake proportionally affects the 4/8 game less than the 2/4. The rake's effect, of course, is even further reduced in, say, at 10/20, but these higher games are significantly tougher (again, speaking from pretty limited experience).

So, if you can beat the 2/4 game, you can almost certainly beat the 4/8 game, and your results should be slightly higher because of the reduced rake. If you've got the bankroll, play the 4/8 for this reason if for no other.

I wouldn't advocate playing in a 10/20 game for that reason alone...but if you're good enough to beat that game too, then the even further reduced rake is a nice side effect.

I suspect that all these observations apply in Vegas as well...to the extent that they're on the mark. Now all you regular 2+2er's can shoot holes in my remarks... :-)
