I know your employer would want you to work 8 straight hours (with an hour for lunch, of course), but considering smoke breaks/socializing and the inability to remain efficient for 8 straight hours, what is reasonable to expect?

Just ask a runner.

The longer the run (marathon) the more you pace yourself, endurance is all that matters.

The shorter the run, you can sprint if you want.

Depending on the industry, I would say that most americans actually do 4 hrs of good work a day.

Your quantity of work should be directly proportional to the quality of your employer's motivation.

That being said - I'm doing some serious overtime.

I'm good for about 2 hours. That said though, I sure wouldn't hire ME.

If I am getting 80% efficiency from my employees, I am happy. Since I found 2+2 two years ago, my efficiency is agout 50%.

Sometimes it's hard to count. If I think about how to solve a problem on my drive home, while I'm eating, etc, does that count as working?

In an office, I think 5 hours of legit work is a good day.

Though my case is not quite usual, I work 12 hours and work anywhere from 12 minutes to all 12 hours, averaging MAYBE an hour.
