View Full Version : modest chip collection - semi-serious question

I've taken to pocketing a $1 chip wherever I play (even if it's from a *gasp* -EV game). I've got about 40 or so from CA, NV, and NJ.
The Binions $1 chips - were they actually white at one time, or were they always kind of a cream or off-white color? If they were indeed white, that's just pretty gross...

They were off white, but the best chips have dice on them.

Actually, I've got one from a craps table at the Cal-Neva in Reno that gives anything I've seen in Binions a run for its scummy.
Those plastic-y ones, like at Bay 101/Commerce are typically nicer, but they're harder to stack, harder to shuffle, and they just don't sound as nice, IMO.

Hello offTopic,
I'm a serious chip collector. The chips I collect are from Nevada and California from the 40's, 50's and 60's, I really don't collect the modern or current chips.
If you are really interested there is a book, The Official US Casino Chip Price Guide by James Campiglia and Steve Wells, which prices and describes all know Nevada chips.
I believe the $1.00 chip you mentioned is the "Hat and Cane" mold and started out beige with 2 black edge inserts.
There is a chip collecting club with branches throughout the country, if you're interested in more info about chip collecting etc, let me know.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info...I may check out a copy of that guide the next time I'm in Vegas and make a pilgrammage to the Gambler's General Store.

Agreed - though I don't play very high, so the collection is abominable. If you catch some cards there, you can really make out compared to a comparable limit game pretty much anywhere else in CA or NV (of course, this is a double-edged sword, but no one on these fora ever loses, right? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif )
