I'm looking for a place with nice weather, not a huge city, with reasonable rent, preferable near the west coast. One place I'm considering right now is the Portland, Oregon area. Need suggestions, thanks guys.

e.g., 'Welcome to California, now go home'

Sacramento is OK. Halfway between Bay Area and Tahoe/Reno.

Seattle is a bit more expensive than Portland, and I heard the weather sucks (lots of rain?).

Sorry Ray, I don't know what that last part means. I heard Portland isn't as sunny as California, but I assumed it didn't get too cold or rain a lot or anything.

You assumed wrong. Portland gets a ton of rain. If you want a big city with great weather (the reason to be on the west coast right?) then you're looking at LA/SD/SF.

Oregon born and raised so I could be biased but I would definitely recommend taking a look here in Portland cause its got everything. A few weeks ago the gf and I stayed the weekend on the coast (1 1/2 hr to Lincoln City), just so happened to be 82 and sunny sky all weekend. Last weekend I rented us a log cabin at Mt. Hood (1 hr drive). If you like the feel of a city but the ability to get to the outdoors in a snap (who wouldn't?) then yeah, Portland's great. As far as going into detail on the city itself and its suburbs just message me and i can give you specifics on whatever it is that you're looking for.
And btw the "duck" reference was to the Oregon Ducks (in Eugene) and it does rain here a lot, almost as much as Seattle.

Sacramento, Santa Cruz, Phoenix, Reno - any of these looking good to you?

The weather is fine. It's grey all winter, 70-80 and dry all summer, and it rains less than most people think. Cost of living is probably higher than Portland though, yeah.

portland is a terrible terrible town. the armpit of oregon. i would rather spend eternity in purgatory than a week in portland.

Probably the coolest place mentioned to me was New Orleans, when I posted this a while ago.

It's near the gulf of mexico, I think... /images/graemlins/smile.gif

And yes, I realize that it's not the weset coast... just saying...

Be prepared to go about 9 months a year without seeing the sun (not a good place for those with suicidal tendancies).

And it's a very expensive place to live. Income and property taxes among the highest in the country. Wages are low and because of strict zoning laws you will end up paying a much higher percentage of your income to rent or buy a home than in most other places. Portland has been ranked as high as SF and Hawaii in cost of living indexes.

Other than that it's great.

Oregon would be a kickass place to live, if it weren't for all the damn hippies.

You do not want to live in New Orleans. Visiting is fun...but I've yet to meet a person who lived in New Orleans without exhibiting one of the two following characteristics:
1) TOTALLY F'ED UP
2) HATED LIVING THERE

So if you're not totally F'ed up, don't move to NO unless you want to hate it.

My immediate response in reading your post title was Ashland Oregon, funny you mentioned Portland. Gorgeous town but rent is kinda steep as far as I know. If you're around there check it out though.

Do you like living in the swamp with a ton of drunken tourists constantly [censored] up your horribly corrupt town?

Do you love drugs and prostitution? Random police beatings?

You`ll love New Orleans!

ITs a great place to visit but dammed if i ever move there.

An older sister lived there for a few years. Years later, I mentioned to her how she called Dad once asking for money to get a boyfriend out of jail. She didn't remember calling, but said, "Yeah, if you go to jail in NO and don't have family or somebody on the outside, you can disappear."

Wow.

This isn't on the coast but Santa Fe is a cool place. It's a rich city in a poor state, I don't know how rent compares to the nation but it's probably above average, I would think it drops quite a bit if you're willing to live a bit outside the city. The city is beautiful there are a lot of great places to hike and do stuff outdoors within a short drive. Skiing is available nearby as is a casino. To top it off there's many more women than men. I haven't been there in a bit, check with someone who has, as I seem to remeber it being a bit expensive. A lot of rich people live there and it's a major art market as well.

Asheville NC used to be a great place- beautiful, cheap to live there, interesting and laid back. Now its full of lesbian anesthestists, neuron-depleted leatherworkers from the '60's, and has more coffee shops than Milan.
