6-12 home game, loose and passive.

I openraise two off the button with JJ. Cutoff and button coldcall, blinds fold.

Flop comes J-T-8 rainbow. I bet and they both call.

Turn is another Jack. Nice card. I bet, CO raises, button folds, I smoothcall.

River is a King. I bet, CO raises, I 3-bet and he calls.
Of course my hand is good, he flopped a set of tens for tens full of jacks.

My question is, why is it better to pop him back on the turn as opposed to the way I played it on the river? I do think that I chose to go with the worse of my two options but I would like to hear why the turn 3-bet is better? thanks much.

Typically they are NOT going to fold which means they are more likely to check next round than call this round. Notice that you are risking 2 bets when you smooth call the turn figuring to check-raise the river.

This course gains nothing against the typical opponent. However, there ARE some opponents who are more likely to bet the river than they are to call a 3-bet on the turn. Against these, you played fine. But you really need to know its this rare type before you should go for it.
