What does it mean to make a 'donk bet'? Is it ever a good thing to do?

Player in front of you either checks/calls and you bet/raise and he calls. On the next round he bets into you. Is it a good thing to do? I'll use the almighty poker scenario word: depends.

P.S. Search function is your friend.

Betting out when your last action on the previous street was a call.

It can be a good thing under certain circumstances, especially when you believe your donkbet will be raised and you want to be raised. E.g.

-If you have a monster and want to 3-bet.

-If you think you may have the best hand and want the LAG on your left to raise you, and hence clear out the field.

I'm sure there are other reasons but these are the most common I think.
