I would like to go two nights a week (fri and sat)

While maybe not the cheapest, the best rate is at the Borgata, as the time you save by staying there and not having to travel there will more than be made up as extra time at the tables.

I've stayed lots of times in AC and I will no longer consider staying anywhere but there.

How is it best to go about getting poker rate rooms? I hear it can involve jumping through a bunch of hoops.

If you have already played at the casino and have a players card it is not that difficult. For example at The Borgata you call up the reservations line and they will ask for your My Borgata number. You give them the number and then tell them you want to book a room using the poker rate. If you don't call at least 2 weeks out you will most likely not get a room. They ask for a credit card to guarantee the room and then you are done.
