View Full Version : 6k to spend on a car- what do you buy?

08-10-2005, 06:22 PM
I'm selling my 98 Taurus and are going to put in about 2500 of my own money in addition towards a new car. What should I buy?

I am looking for a car. It does not matter if it is a coupe or a sedan, or if it's small to mid to large. It must be able to seat 5 though. Style is kinda important but is not the biggest factor. My Taurus has 70k on it so I'd like to keep the new car that I get to under 80k miles if possible. I'm willing to consider all cars that are 97 and newer. I don't mind picking up a 97 if it's a nice car.

Foreign, American, it doesn't matter to me, as long as parts are easily accessible for replacement and the car has been generally reliable over the years.

I do not want an SUV, van, or pickup. It has to be a car.

Thanks for your help and for the suggestions that you give,

Scoot

I'm waiting to hear how old an M3 is going to have to be in order to get one for $6k.

Maybe I should edit my post to BAN discussions of cars liek BMWs and Benzes from the discussion.

I made the parameters 97 and newer. There is no nice BMW that ill be able to find for that price unless it has a TON of miles on it.

Any suggestions though Patrick?

I'm a big fan of Hondas. I don't think you can go wrong with an Accord or Civic.

I was looking at a 97 Maxima locally actually, but I will look at the Sentra as well. What do you think of the Maxima?

don't get a car. you know how many whores you can get for 6k? plus, they'll probably have (slightly) less miles on them.

I asked for similar advice (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=exchange&Number=2894389&Fo rum=f20&Words=suggest&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Main=2 894389&Search=true&where=sub&Name=23842&daterange= 1&newerval=10&newertype=w&olderval=&oldertype=&bod yprev=#Post2894389), was looking at Civics, Preludes and Accords and ended up buying a '99 Civic EX coupe with 100k miles. Don't regret it one bit.

Just one piece of advice: don't get an American car. Foreign cars are comparatively SO much better.. carsurvey.org is really good if you're looking at a model you're not familiar with. Get to know the seller and go with your gut.. a couple of times I loved the car but felt the seller was acting fishy, so I went home and found that the seller had lied about accidents that were on Carfax. Also, Carfax isn't always reliable, so don't always believe the report.. good luck and let us know what you end up getting.

Thanks for the post. Yes I've been leaning towards a foreign car.

What do you think of like a mid to late 90s Nissan Maxima?

I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra that I bought brand new for like $13k. It's great, I haven't had any problems with it yet *fingers crossed*. Only thing I've noticed (and I've read on other boards about similar experiences) are the brakes are kind of weak.

I just bought a 1997 Avalon for $5500. It's conservative but I'm not into flashy cars. I am pleased so far.

Who convinced you to buy the Taurus, Bad Advice Guy?

In any case, Civic, Accord, Corolla, or Camry.

Not much to add, just wanted to throw Hyundai into the mix. I've got an '05 Santa Fe (not what you're looking for & obviously more than $6k) which I have been nothing short of pleased with, and one of my coworkers swears by his Accent. You should be able to find a relatively new Accent or Elentra (maybe Sonata) in your price range.

I found when I was shopping for my new car that Hyundai generally offered the most car for the money if you're not willing/able to throw down the cash for a luxury car. Anyway, just thought you should add them to the list of possibilities.

Save your money. Keep the Taurus. Drive it until it is unreliable. Buy better car for more than $6K.

Buy domestic, remember you are buying a used car and cost of parts should be factored in. My recommendation for bang for your buck is a Sunfire or Cavalier and it's not close.

Unless the five you want to seat are Oompa Loompas and/or munchkins, you really don't want a Civic or Corolla. These compact cars will seat four smaller than average people, but five will be pushing it.

Look at Mitsubishi Diamante and Galant. These are more reliable than American mades, but usually much cheaper than Accords or Camrys.

In 2000, my parents found a used, er....pre-owned 1995 Mercury Cougar with 125K miles on it for just $5K. Baby hasn't let me down yet.

Get a Maxima. With Bose if possible. You'll be glad you did.

I went from a '96 Taurus to an 01 Max.

Besides, Hondas are for girly men.

get a 99 Pontiac Grand Am GT, My 97 drove 6000 miles around the US with 130,000 miles on it without a hitch. The only problem I had were the windows not going up because of a faulty regulator and the water pump went at like 120,000 miles, but thats typical at 100,000.
