i bet about half the pot and hope for a free showdown, since you've got position

with that said, this is an unraised pot and villain could literally have anything. which of course leads to the debate of your flop play

In this situation I bet out. There's only one out I want to see on the river, the non /images/graemlins/club.gif 9, so if I bet here and I'm raised I can safely throw the hand away and I've lost nothing on the river. If he flat calls, then re-evaluate on the river, but I'm not calling much more than a small bet, if that.

Most small bets here are a large portion of my stack. Pot is 500 I have 1k behind.

What do you put him on?

He could have an 8, he could have 2 pair, he could have two clubs... he could have an oesd (which if it was 9T got there)...

Most of your opponents are bluff happy idiots.
Checking the turn exploits this weakness.
Betting the turn rewards it.
