I'd like to buy my girlfriend a laptop with wireless, CD R/W, 256 meg, 40 gb drive, 15" screen, parallel port...something basic. I'm not real computer savvy...

1. how much should I hope to spend? (I'm cheap!)
2. I see stuff about coupons...anyone tell me where to find them?
3. What are good brand names or those to avoid?

Need some expert advice please...

You can start with a lower end Dell Inspiron 2200 Notebook (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_inspn2200?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs) and then customize it to fit the exacts needs you are looking for.

Coupons can be found here, possibly. (http://www.techbargains.com/coupons.cfm)

Even if you are gonna buy a budget computer I would highly recomend getting 512mb ram instead of 256mb.

definetaly!!!

also, you want a processor > 1.5 Ghz. Anything less is slooooooow. Heck, I'm not even happy with my 2.4 - Hope 3.6 does the trick.
