View Full Version : Just how bad was this play?

I played a careful game to get into the money, but 2 mates were watching me play so for some reason I go and do this:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t150 (3 handed) converter (http://www.selachian.com/tools/bisonconverter/hhconverter.cgi)

Hero (t2315)
Button (t4820)
SB (t6365)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 9/images/graemlins/heart.gif, 9/images/graemlins/spade.gif.
Button raises to t400, 1 fold, Hero calls t250.

Flop: (t875) T/images/graemlins/heart.gif, 2/images/graemlins/diamond.gif, 7/images/graemlins/spade.gif (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets t300, Hero raises to t1915, Button calls t1615.

Turn: (t4705) 3/images/graemlins/heart.gif (2 players)

River: (t4705) K/images/graemlins/spade.gif (2 players)

Final Pot: t4705

Results in white below:
Hero has 9h 9s (one pair, nines).
Button has Kc Tc (two pair, kings and tens).
Outcome: Button wins t4705.

Obviously I got a load of stick from the guys watching. I tried half-heartedly to justify it - something about wanting to see a flop so I could push if it look safe, or get out if it looked bad.

Was this an plain awful play, or merely ill-advised?

I would push preflop.

Push preflop.

Flop is odd. With just a T, I think your hand is good. T950 in the middle, t2k left about. Push or check time... I shove here.

ditto. you don't have enough chips to C/R the flop.

If you fully expect the Button to continue on this flop even if he misses, then the check-raise is fine. However, you are better off pushing preflop with 99 because you have enough chips left to make the Button fold hands like KT (maybe) as well as many steal hands that could be raising here.

Pushing preflop also prevents the mistake of folding on a flop like AJ5 when you are still ahead.

Yup, gotta push this preflop. Button could be raising with a lot of hands, and in this spot you really dont have enough chips to take a flop with 99.

Seems fine to me.

You mean preflop as well?

Could be my bad, but I wouldn't even consider not pushing preflop.

I would just push preflop.

I don't even know why you posted this hand, if you aren't pushing it preflop then you are going in on any flop jack high and down.

Why not push PF? The C/R isn't going to move him off top pair. Can you explain? thanks.

I suppose I wanted to know if there are many alternatives to just pushing when I find a hand I like. I was in the mindset of not worrying about going out on the bubble - so I wondered if I'd make more money if I let him bluff the flop (allowing me to call or re-raise if I think he missed)

And also cos it's confusing when you make what I thought was an okay play after I fumbled the chance to push pre-flop(like you say, go all-in on most flops), but you get a load of criticism from people watching. I thought I'd some here for a professional opinion!

Thanks for the replies.

Becasue most of the time he doesn't have top pair. Pushing preflop is probably better, but I don't think this line is bad as a change of pace.
