trey anastasio band/solo shows do not count. it also doesn't count if you just hung out in the parking lot and didn't go into the venue for the show.

Once was enough. '94 Halloween show in Chicago. 2nd set was Quadrophenia in its entirety - quite awesome. Almost all of the hippies around me were confused as hell. "Dude - what are these tunes??? Why did they just smash their guitars???"

Knowing about the halloween shows is standard, at least, among the tape traders.

a better question would be would I rather go to a phish concert or get gang raped by the entire San Quentin prison?

I guess it all depends on if you'd rather hit a bong or get hit by a dong.

if your answer is the latter, you have some serious soul-searching to do.

I used to think this too. But I really don't like at least 30% of Dead songs (mostly Bob Weir's "cowboy" songs) and I can't think of more than a couple Phish songs I don't like.

Therefore, Phish (slightly) > The Grateful Dead

However,

Jerry Garcia >>> Trey Anastasio

And if you actually meant the latest incarnation, "The Dead"

Phish >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Dead

hell yeah. while i got some weird looks, i'd meet some cool people too. almost as fun was wearing a phish shirt to an earth crisis show. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

one time when i was walking through the lot going into a phish concert in atlanta, i saw this bearded hippy-looking guy standing there with a boombox. when i got closer i heard what he was playing: "the brews" by nofx. now, i'm not much of a huge nofx fan, but i love that song, so i gave him props.

Oh no - def. not the latest incarnations. I've never heard a Dead song I didn't like.

Perhaps we can agree to disagree and say thusly:

Jam Bands >>> all others ?

8/16 in Mansfield, MA. Wasn't the best, but it was pretty good. They opened with Divided Sky, and the Tweezer Reprise encore was just sick.

I was there too, a truly awesome show. The next night @ the World Music theatre was also damn fine.

I only went to about 7 phish shows, after '95 I was pretty much over it though they were damn cool in the early 90's and I still listen to recordings from this era fairly frequently.

LOL! One sure thing about jam bands: you either DO or you DON'T. It is one of the few things in life with virtually no middle ground.

Yeah, I was also at the World show (in body if not in mind). Two nights after that one this rocked my world too:

08/16/93 American Theater, St. Louis, MO
Set I: Axilla, Possum> Horn, Reba, Sparkle, Foam, I Didn't Know, Split Open and Melt, Squirming Coil
Set II: Mike's Song1> Faht> Weekapaug Groove2, Mound, It's Ice, My Friend My Friend, Poor Heart, Big Ball Jam, Take the A-Train, Good Times Bad Times
Encore: Amazing Grace, Rocky Top

Trey went so crazy on Squirming Coil my brain melted.
