I understand that most casinos will ask a prospective poker dealer to pass an audition especially if the dealer lacks prior experience or a referral from a dealing school. What goes on in the audition? How long does it last and what skills are tested there?

One audition I took lasted almost 10 minutes, I had to deal three hold'em, three O-8, and three stud hands. This all occurred in a back room with other auditioning dealers, using fake chips.

Most auditions are about two or three hands in a live game, usually 2-4. If the room regularly spreads O-8 don't be surprised if they throw you right in there.

During your audition, you MUST get the rake exactly right, otherwise you will likely not pass. Obviously you should get everything else right too....

Thank you, Ed Miller, for getting me in the habit of counting pots!

Personally I think they should make you rake the pink chip game as an audition....
