Opponent is one of the best players at the table. I don't have the PT stats but he's probably a little too loose preflop but plays well after the flop.

My image at this point is very LAG, bordering on maniac preflop -- i've probably opened for 24 the last 4 pots. i think it's pretty apparent though that i've been playing decently post flop.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $6 BB (9 handed) converter (http://www.selachian.com/tools/bisonconverter/hhconverter.cgi)

Hero ($1583.55)
MP1 ($606)
MP2 ($300.90)
MP3 ($594.15)
CO ($1189.80)
Button ($670.75)
SB ($1144.30)
BB :#A500AF(Villian)/ ($1351.20)
UTG ($594)

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with 9/images/graemlins/diamond.gif, 9/images/graemlins/club.gif.
<font color="#666666">1 fold</font>, <font color="#CC3333">Hero raises to $24</font>, <font color="#666666">3 folds</font>, CO calls $24, <font color="#666666">2 folds</font>, BB :#A500AF(Villian)/ calls $18.

Flop: ($75) 9/images/graemlins/spade.gif, 6/images/graemlins/heart.gif, 7/images/graemlins/diamond.gif <font color="#0000FF">(3 players)</font>
Villian checks, <font color="#CC3333">Hero bets $54</font>, CO folds, <font color="#CC3333">Villian raises to $144</font>,

what's the best move here? i don't think villian can be on total air here, but i'm not sure his hand has to be amazing to make this play.

Considering your current table image, I would try to exploit it as best I could.

Re-raise to $400, if villian has a high PP, he might think you're full of it and make a big move. If he has a set, you stack him. If he has the straight.... pair the board.
