View Full Version : Shill/Prop is this a good thing

Is it an "honor" to be a shill or a prop at a casino? I would think that it was a regular who the casino wanted to start games, but I honestly don't know. I was at a table at a place and they were going to start a new table. The floor came over and asked if he wanted to go help start the new table. Earlier he went away and started an omaha game. I asked (innocently, I thought), if he was a shill or prop - thinking that it was a good thing. I thought that he was going to come over the table and stangle me "We don't do that here - you are insulting me and the casino ahole - do you think that I look like one". I was dumbstruck, apologized a few times and eventually because of the tension at the table got up and left. Guess I should have asked here before I asked at the table.

Thanks

Somebody getting mad at this question is just being dumb. But to make a long story short...props are bad for poker for several reasons. I don't feel like going into it but its just a bad deal overall.

I'm not sure where you play, but the state of Nevada has a very good law mandating that props and shills MUST identify themselves upon request. Every state that allows shills and props should pass this law.

I am sure that you have good reasons even if you don't state them.

I believe that props are important to a card room.

I agree that many people, if not a majority, are intimidated or afraid of them. Their only function is to start a game and to keep one going. They should not be in a game when there are patrons ready to play.

In Vegas there are not too many rooms left that use props. Props are easy to read if you frequent an establishment. You learn you can beat them or you can't.
