View Full Version : Going to Vegas for the first time: question about tournaments

08-07-2005, 10:03 AM
I'm a newbie, but I'd like to play poker while in Vegas. (No, I won't say when. I don't need any "aquarium managers" looking for me!)

I *think* that I prefer to play tournaments as opposed to cash games, because I like to play in an environment where others might be more cautious. I also like to play no-limit because of the ability to push people around a little and, at least in my mind, make more interesting bluffs.

(All of this could of course be entirely wrong. I just don't care much for limit and/or cash games.)

Where can I find lower-dollar no-limit tournaments on the weekend while in Vegas? I see that Monday-Thursday (and in some cases Friday morning), there are plenty available, but I will be there Friday to Monday. I suppose the take for the casinos is not big enough in tournaments to make them profitable over the weekend.

Are there any casinos, however, that have these lower-dollar no-limit tournaments over the weekend? I'm looking for something costing $100 or less.

Thanks,

KR

They're out there. I'd pick up a CardPlayer or PokerPlayer magazine and scan the listings. I was out there a few weeks ago, looking for the same thing. For starters, there's a $70 w/optional $40 rebuy daily at Binion's, which was relatively fun. The MGM has one at 9:30 or 10:00 which is under $100, too (although the price escapes me right now.)

A word of caution: the blind structures on these tournaments are extremely fast, generally doubling every twenty minutes. You also tend to start with 1000-1200 chips and blinds of 25-25 or 25-50, which doesn't give you a lot of chips with which to make a lot of small moves with speculative hands. You can try to make big bluffs, but players get in positions where they will call you with, say, bottom pair and a backdoor flush draw because they just laid something else down and they're feeling the pressure of the structure. Pick your spots well.

Good luck,

-D.
