I was at a soccer match recently where a girl commented
"Gee there are a lot of guys here who drive chick cars"

Got me thinking what cars are strictly girl only

Volkswagon anything
Jeep Wrangler (can be driven by men, but mostly a chick car)
Honda CRV (but if we're gonna go that road, might as well mention all the obvious minivans and station wagons and other small to midsize SUV's.)

I don't know how people could designate Pontiac's as chick cars, particularly the Grand Prix. To me they seem to be pretty gender neutral. Same goes for the Chevy Cavalier, it's not a manly car by any means, but men who can't afford better drive them.

The Miata is definitely the perennial chick car. In fact, every time I see one on the road driven by a man I snicker to myself. Usually the guy at the wheel is older, balding, and looking rather silly.

You might also add my wife's newest vehicle to the list: Ford Expedition. I'd venture than 80% of all Expeditions on the road are driven primarily by women. Same goes for Suburbans and Tahoes.

While I see the femininity of some of these cars, others I'm just not seeing it. Maybe I'd see it better with some examples of masculine cars to contrast. What's a manly car that costs <$30k?

I'll grant you its a "family" car and its clearly not a "man's" car, but are volvo's really "chick" rides? On the "chick ride" scale, with convertible cabrio being a 10 and {insert rebuilt muscle car of your choice here} being a 1, a Volvo (IMHO) falls in at about a 4 or 5 (yes, I drive one).

Mini Cooopers are not chick cars. They are middle-aged nerd and/or cargeek cars.

Miatas are also generally considered chick cars. However, I think they're more of a poor man's midlife crisis car. They're also awesome for autocross. A similar car is the Honda S2000. It too is quite awesome for autocross but falls in the same category as the Miata for regular use, only it's a shade more of a chick car than the Miata.

I don't know that I'd call WRX a manly car. Don't get me wrong, Subarus are great and all, and the WRX is quite impressive in terms of performance, but the looks of it doesn't exactly ooze masculinity. Like an earlier poster said, a 1960s or 1970s muscle car would probably be about as masculine as you get, or maybe a full-size truck, not one with off-road package and big tires, but a regular work truck.

Well, first, I assumed that we were talking about current cars, not old ones. Quite frankly, not a lot of contemporary cars "ooze" masculinity, certainly not many under $30k. Second, the question asked about cars, not trucks.

You're right, so if we keep this discussion to current cars only I'd have to say there are very few cars that I'd classify as "masculine." One exception might be the new Dodge Charger, I really like the looks of it.

I don't know. I like what they're trying to do with it, even if it comes off as just following Ford's lead with the Mustang, but it just doesn't seem to work right. I think the new Mustang did a much better job of blending the old muscle car look with more modern design. That said, this is definitely a man's car.

I thought about that before my post - - I think his is a special situation since it was the first time anyone had ever seen the car. If you saw Pierce Brosnan drive up in a Z3 to a club in L.A., people would probably laugh at him. It's all relative to where you live. In Brazil, you'd get instantly carjacked if you drove a 3-series.

My thought is don't buy it if you have to think about whether it's a chick car or not.

I wouldn't call a Jetta a chick car. If you were driving a Cabrio you'd definitely be a bitch, but Jettas are pretty much the standard younger upper-middle class vehicle of choice these days. The fact that its a six speed is definitely a redeeming factor.
