yet another dell 2001fp question

forgive me for i am technologically challenged. i recently bought 2 dell 2001fp's for 8-tabling madness. the intstructions show to hook it up to your comp via dvi cable AND usb port. what is the purpose of the usb connection? currently, i am just hooked up via dvi without the usb and it works fine. am i missing out on some performance by bypassing the usb connection???

The usb is not needed, it is usually there to be able to control the monitor from the computer.

The monitor acts as a usb hub. By not connecting the USB cord, the 4 USB ports on the 2001fp remain inactive. Unless you need additional USB ports, there is no need to hook it up.
