View Full Version : Music after 1990 is crap

Thank God I grew up in the late 80s. Its hard to imagine what today's youth will listen to in their old age. I can just see my little sister and her husband sittin on the porch in their 60s listening to "Shake ur ass, show me what ur workin wit" and saying "oh honey, there's our song on the radio."

You might want to consider the possibility that there is plenty of good music being made that isn't on MTV or the radio.

LOL - The 80's are clearly the worst musical decade ever (1960-present). Mentioning the 80's and 90's in the same breath is insulting to the 90's.

I agree with you in where your taste lies, I don't like much rock music today, but I also firmly believe that we all like the music we hear in our youth, and once we hit a certain age, we stop liking new music, (or new music that doesn't somehow remind us of music from our youth) for whatever reason.

I'm also pretty sure pop music was/is always produced to be marketable above everything else.

I also think you may be overestimating my age /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Clark,

You and your snooty one liners. Ok, the 80s lyrics were meaningful and made you think. For example, just consider the following lines:

Lying beside you, here in the dark
Feeling your heart beat with mine
Softly you whisper, you're so sincere
How could our love be so blind
We sailed on together
We drifted apart
And here you are by my side

So now I come to you, with open arms
Nothing to hide, believe what I say
So here I am with open arms
Hoping you'll see what your love means to me
Open arms

Dam that's some meaningful chit....

Now, check this out from the 90s:

Yo yo, this Mase, youknowhatI'msayin?
You got niggaz that don't like me for whatever reason
You got niggaz that don't wanna see me rich
You got niggaz that's mad, cause I'm always with they bitch
Then you got niggaz that just don't like me
You know, the, those P.H.D. niggaz
But you know I pop a lot of [censored] but I back it up though
see it's a difference, a lot of niggaz pop [censored]
But a lot of niggaz don't make hits
But it's like this whole Bad Boy [censored]
we come to bring it to y'all niggaz, me, B.I., Puff, Lox, whoever
Black Rob
If you wanna dance, we dance

Need I say more?

In another post you said you are 29, so how the hell are you "growing up" in the late '80s? In 1987 you're, what, 11? I'm 35 and when I was 11 I was listening to Lipps Inc's Funkytown but I don't consider that the music I grew up with. I'm more influenced by that late 80s stuff because that's when I'm 16-20. I gave up on most new music listening after first wave grunge. But the mid 90s Britpop reaction (and others) brought me back and I'd stack Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Blur, Belle and Sebastian, Oasis, Stereophonics and many others up against any set of mainly 80s bands. So, if I mostly listen to that stuff then at least I'm only a few years behind. In fact, classic rock listeners of any kind (which is now stretching into the 80s) kind of piss me off for not even trying to find something new to listen to. It isn't on your local top 40 station but look harder.

BTW, from your other post, I'm not even going to look it up, but I consider Journey a 70s band not 80s. I'm sure some albums are from the 80s but even so, they deserve to be classified as bad late 70s rock. And Queensryche? Jesus.

too much electric fill and tweaking of tone and crap. agreed there's no Elvis or Beatles around now, but there's also no Sam Cooke, Levi Stubbs, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Byrds, Cream or any of a multitude of others with true talent. Or, maybe there is, but we can't tell because, since the 80's (extra swill points because this is the decade where it started), every record put out sounds nothing like the performers actually sound like live. anyone with a look can get a reasonable sounding record out because the electronics will cover up most of the flaws.

Wow, there are so many ignorant comments being made in this thread it's hard to tell where to start.

First, no decade is qualitatively better than any other musically. People weren't inherently more creative/talented in the 80s than the 90s, or vice versa.

The 80s brought us such greatness as Talking Heads, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, GnR, pre-suck Metallica, Slayer, Public Enemy, RunDMC, and many (probably obvious) others.

90s: we had Radiohead, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Beck, Weezer, REM (80s too I know), Oasis, Blur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and I'm too lazy to name more but hopefully you get the point.

So to the OP, stop making stupid-ass troll posts that get me all worked up at 11 am before I've even had time to finish my muffin. That is all.
