View Full Version : AK preflop question at the 11s

08-04-2005, 12:04 AM
5th hand of a 11 - just wondering if simply to call or reraise with AK after a raise of about 3xBB and a caller. I remember hearing or reading somewhere always reraise with AK. I usually try to stay away from coin flips early but decided to gamble for a big stack. Thanks

If your not good at playing post flop then maybe a push but with position def bad all in. Your lucky this guy was a donk but often times its a coin flip. I would have saw a flop in this situation.

Bad players will call in worse spots than this. Hit your ace or king and then bet. They'll still call with garbage, but you'll be harder to beat.

As I see it:
In mid limit deep stacked cash games you raise with AK for three reasons.

For informational purposes (If you get rereraised you know roughly what hands you are up against).
For the value of your hand (you want to get more money in the middle with a hand that figures to win often).
To drive ppl out of the pot (you don't want the BB to get a free look at the flop, and you are happy if you drive out small pairs).

In a short stacked 10+1 SNG you are less likely to get any information of a reraise since ppl tend to call or rereraise with junk (like villian did here).
You are also less likely to drive out lesser hands with a reraise for the same reasons, and villian has already raised which will drive out most junk hands.

Since EV not equals $EV in a SNG I'd be happy to just take a flop here with position and make a bet of about half the pot if I don't hit and it checks to me.
If you do hit you have to figure out a way to get the most value from your hand.

I guess my humble opinion is that you should play it safe here and not go for an early coinflip.

I used to do this at the 10s sometimes. Enjoy it while you can, it *won't* work as you move up. But yeah, what others said... I still don't think its the best way to play the hand at all, though it probably is marginally +EV at this level.
