I had a feeling the raise from the button meant AJ, AQ, KQ, KJs, or a medium pocket pair. I figured AK and JJ-AA would throw in a larger preflop raise. I also thought that if he only called my checkraise on the flop that he would probably fold to any aggression on the turn if he doesn't make his hand.

Tell me what I did wrong.

i would stay away from that kind of reasoning. some guys make smaller raises with monsters, and others are the opposite. most 2+2 regards a smaller raise as scarier.

i'd check-fold the flop absent a read.

You got a lot of your chips in at level 1 against a weak lineup ($11) with Ace high and still managed to give a free card in the process.

That's a bit harsh of me, but it might get you planning ahead a little more.

You took a route that gave yourself a chance at losing a chunk of chips without even seeing the river.
In a cash game, I suspect this play wouldn't be bad, in a tournament, you are risking your livlihood against mediocre players with a mediocre hand whilst out of position.
If you have position on the guy and make the identical play, then on the turn you get a choice whether to bet again or to take a freebie.

I think your logic is fine, but I think it involved getting too many chips into the pot on this occasion, especially as your stack is a little short.

Would it be wrong to reraise preflop followed by a continuation bet and fold if raised?

I don't like reraising here because I'm in the SB.

I guess I should have just led out on the flop then?

Or check/fold the flop? I think that's weak.

I wouldn't say check/folding this flop is weak. You have ace high, there's a fair number of hands that are ahead of you and you don't have position. Leading this flop is bad, you get raised by overs that your beating and stuff that really is beating you a ton, leaving you with no clue where you stand.

Its an aggressive play which I think is marginal with position and pretty bad when you have to lead again after he calls your check raise, because many players I've seen will smooth call checkraises like that and then push when you bet into them again.
