First, what exactly does the term "dead money" mean, and how is it used?

Also, would be interested in any history on the term. Thanks in advance.

There are two meanings for "dead money" so far as I know.

The first is more objective and refers to money put into the pot that makes it larger without giving any specific player an advantage. For instance, if you miss both of your blinds and come in on the CO, you'll post the BB and the SB. The SB is dead money.

The other usage is more subjective and usually refers to a player who is adding money to the prize pool (or pots) but has no chance of winning that money. For instance, a very bad player who plays a major tournament against experienced players will sometimes be referred to as "dead money". It's derrogatory term for a player.

Great explanation. The second definition was the one I was looking for.
