I just got back from Las Vegas. We drove down there last Friday, then flew to Detroit from there on Tuesday to visit my wife's family. We then returned to Las Vegas and stayed a couple days and drove back here. I ended up winning to the tune of about $3 per hour. Sort of sad, but not a very big statistical sample.(But that cuts both ways, huh?) I played mostly 4-8 HE at both Bellagio and Orleans, but also played 8-16 at Bellagio and some 6-12 at Orleans and Mirage. The games were mostly good, but the Orleans games can get bad. Although some of the locals make some mistakes and are not all good players, there are more decent players in Las Vegas. I like the comp system at the Orleans where you collect comps on your card. That is a good way to do it since you can spend it on what you want. We got the poker rate for the room and about three meals for two out of it.
A few restaurant reviews- The Mexican restaurant at the Orleans is solid mediocre with good chips and dipping stuff. It is convenient and I like it pretty well. I was surprised by the Canal Street restaurant at the Orleans. I had a very good steak there that didn't cost too much. The atmosphere and overall quality is nowhere close to a top-notch place like Delmonico, but for the money it was OK. We ate at the Chinese restaurant in the Venetian's restaurant row. I forget the name but it was very good. After reading the thread below on tofu hot dogs, I will just mention that the White Castle grease bombs, Coney Island chili dogs, and steak subs in Detroit were pretty good. That was about as gourmet as we got in Detroit.
Air travel was a lot less convenient. I hadn't flown since 9/11, so didn't know exactly what to expect. But in addition to crowded planes where morons sing and scream to their friends seven rows away, or play music without headphones (Yes all this happened) you have to go through a bunch of extra security. I suppose it is appropriate, but I don't think some of the measures will do anything.
I wrote down some hands when I was there and may post them. It helped me to write down some stuff right after it happened.
Biggest complaint - talking dealers at Bellagio. Most dealers are OK, but the Bellagio has a couple who just kill the action by talking so much the game never moves. I get being friendly, but there's one dealer who will give you her life story in one down. Anyone else have this problem there? I did enjoy seeing the one I was frustrated with get reprimanded a little by a player in the top section when I was walking by.
The drive back was no fun. There are a whole lot of sagebrush between here and there. Bad weather can make it seem like more.
