View Full Version : Arg... could we please get rid of the mods?

(More appropriately titled: Could Matt please ban the mods?)

Here's how it worked in OOT old-school (3 months ago /images/graemlins/cool.gif ).

If someone swore, we ignored it. If they swore a lot, someone would delete it / ban the offender. Ditto with porn / semiporn. Ditto with racism.

---

To give you an idea of where things have gotten now, I made the following post:

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=2808898&page=&view=&s b=5&o=&vc=1

Which was moved to news/views/gossip, because of "poker content". The post was a poll to see which 2+2 author (S or M) looked more like a serial killer on the back of HPFAP. It certainly wasn't poker content. Maybe not that funny, but really not poker content.

I haven't spoken publicly about this until now, but I'm starting to get pissed after seeing over-moderation becoming rampant.

Anyways, it was a Friday night, so I figure a certain mod was just a little boozed up when he made his decision... I don't hold it against them personally, esp. as I figure that he was doing it to protect 2+2 rather than to move "poker content", but come on, I think the author's have pretty thick skin about stuff like this.

---

Let's contrast this with moderation on the MTT or STT forum (I can't remember which).

I'd written a post without emphasizing the question that I needed answered, and thus, didn't get any helpful responses. The edit time elapsed, so I made another post, editing to the same content, and explained in the top of the post the purpose of the duplicate post. This time I got a bunch of responses re: duplicate posting, again, not helpful. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

The mod took the body of my edited post, moved it to the location of the original post, and deleted the second post... which would have been my original intent anyways. So I was very pleased with that.

---

I'm putting this up as an example that moderation around here doesn't have to be about creating the perfect forum in the opinion of the mod, but rather in just making sure that things go smoothly and that people aren't posting "hateful/profane" things.

I'm very disappointed in the mods right now, at least, of OOT.

I think the major problem is, OOT Is the most popular forum, so all the Mods are in it, because they are posters just like us; too many chefs in the kitchen and all.

this may be the problem...however, it IS a problem.

If Commodus gets banned, it will signal the death of OOT.

GimmickAcctJudge

he registered before today, so apparently he gets to stay (and rightfully so).

However, that means Donald Trump needs to be banned and all his posts deleted.

Only OOT mods can move, delete, or lock threads in here.
I thought this was fairly common knowledge on 2+2.

No. They are better in the long run. Your poll wasn't that interesting anyways.

Overall, I think having mods is a great move for 2+2, but I can't see any positive from having them be anonymous. This is a community and it makes sense to have some people help keep the community within reasonable standards. I think any good mod would be willing to take responsibility for his judgement calls. If they make a mistake, they can accept feedback from the community and get better at their task. Hell, even the guy who banned SpicyF due to a personal squabble outside of 2+2 has been reinstated as a mod. I can't think of a worse abuse of power by a mod, yet that received just a little slap on the wrist. If mods have such complete authority over the community, at least let them be accountable for their actions (via their anonymous online personas!). As things stand, anonymous mods sort of act in a vacuum, making it tougher for a good status quo to be achieved.

Better yet, of characters played by Fred Thompson. For a US Senator, he's a damn good actor.

You know, I really don't think a-hole should be filtered. It does bring a little bit of flavor and a different meaning than f-er, which is what everyone will assume I wrote there. When will these fuckers get the damned filter right?
