I was thinking of pushing preflop but didn't want to commit so much with just JJ.... no real reads on the guys. I figured the check-raise I was beat... I don't know.

I am a newbie but there is something wrong preflop. Its not early anymore so you should put in a hefty raise with JJ, possibly all in.

In general, from BB preflop is you're best chance of betting JJ cos you're out of position from there on.
With JJ you want to try to get rid of everyone whos drawing to Ax, Kx and Qx.
A push pf will almost certainly eliminate Kx which is what pitty13 seems to have.
