Cool. I see that it remembered my name and I do need a password.

The ramifications being...?

11-23-2001, 09:00 AM
The ramifications are simply that we are doing everything possible to maintain the high quality of information that is exchanged on these forums.

This site has been in existence for a little over five years (if my memory is accurate). When we started we weren't even sure that we would get anyone to participate, and certainly didn't know what they might say. Now we have had some days with over 150,000 hits, which is an incredible number. To give you an idea of the growth of these forums, about three years ago we had a day where the number of hits went over 5,000.

So the new software will hopefully assure that everything continues to run well and that we all get the maximum benefit from this site and have a little fun while we're at it.

Best wishes,

Mason

Lin,

Other than behind the scenes changes, not much. But I like to keep the readers aware in case something goes wrong.

One feature added is the ability to create and password protect profiles. Once you do this, you must use your password to post under the created name. We are not requiring this to participate in the forums though.

Chuck,

Regarding passwords, "Rick Nebiolo" chose to use a password. Now only I or someone who guesses my password could post under that name.

OTOH, if I chose to post as "The IRS" as a joke (I like to needle people who talk about their hourly rates), I can do so without a password as long as no one has password protected that posting handle.

I can also chose to password protect an alter ego. I can do that as long as no one has already protected that name.

Is this correct?

Regards,

Rick

PS If so, I don't see how anybody could complain /images/smile.gif .

OK, now I get it. It demanded a password before I posted, but only because it auto-entered a registered name...

Yes, Rick...you have it right. But I am sure that someone will find a reason to complain before too long. /images/frown.gif

The password-protected profile sounds great, although I'm not sure why anybody would pretend to be me.

I've noticed some other minor improvements which have made the forum much more usable for me, notably eliminating the pop-up ads. The server also seems to be a lot faster than it was in the past.

Keep up the good work, Chuck.
