Villain had only been at table for one round, so I really didn't have any info on him. Did I miss a couple of bets here?

Yes you missed bets. Easy 3 bet on the turn.

3-bet the turn or raise the river. If it might be a bluff, let him fire again on the river.

I think that I initially just called the turn, because of a vague plan to raise the river. But then the river card scared me and I didn't follow through.

I would have 3 bet the turn.

Given you called the turn, you can't raise the river when the K falls. Although based on how you've phrased your post, sounds like he has Ax.

Actually, party396 had it correct: villain had Ax. Guess he was one of these people who just like to see a turn when they have an Ace.

But this hand does reveal a bad habit I have. Sometimes I take one action earlier in the hand with one plan, and then precipitiously forget about that plan on the next street.

Like I said before, I was semi-suspicious of the turn raise, and believe I was planning to raise the river; for I actually thought that the guy might have Ax. Yet, I managed to forget about that read a half second later when the King fell on the river. Suddenly, I wondered whether the villain had bet out on a draw earlier.

With a better read than one orbit of player, this river because a pretty good spot for a raise. If he's not overly tricky, he can't raise that river without the case Q, but he will call with any single pair, 2 pair, or even a set that beats you. I'd personally raise that river anyway if I didn't raise the turn and then reevaluate on a call if he 3-bets.

It does look like he has Ax, but since he just hit his ace, he's not going anywhere if you 3-bet the turn
