View Full Version : Have i misunderstood this?

I'm not sure why this has hit me all of the sudden, but i need an answer to this before i go to sleep.

A standard preflop raise is 3x the BB. This seemed like a very obvious concept until about 2 minutes ago. So if someone can just clarify this for me, thatd be great.

Example:

Blinds are 50/100. I'm UTG. Am i raising TO 3x the BB (300) or am i raising 3 BBs (400 total chips)?

90% of my raises at this level are to 300 chips. Is that the "correct" raise?

I can't believe I had to ask this question, but for some reason I can't give myself a definite answer.

Thanks (I've yet to be flamed on these boards, so if you feel the need to get some anger out, go ahead)

300 is making it 3x the BB, the "correct" raise.

who says 3x is correct? i prefer raising 4x BB. too often 3x gets called and there's too little fold equity.

i actually wouldn't mind starting to track how often i get called with a 3x raise compared to a 4x raise.

If you have a raising hand, you usually want a few callers.

this has been discussed in the past.

look in the archives for an old post of mine from over a year ago titled "has 3x become 4x". Fossilman has some nice input there.

Basically, you want the smallest possible raise that will effectively steal the blinds. That can be anywhere from 2.5x-4.5x. Just note that the bigger the raise has to be, the less often you should be raising and vice versa.
