If someone was able to gain access to your computer through your broadband connection, wireless encryption wouldn't save you anyway. But, no, if someone gains access to your computer that is out of range of your router, it's not the internet connection they're after since they would need one in order to have their way with your computer. As long as you're not in a urban area, I wouldn't even bother with WEP as it just hampers the quality of your connection.
