Party 5/10 6m. Unknown player limps UTG (he's played one orbit). Fairly loose-seeming player completes in the SB. I check A/images/graemlins/spade.gif4/images/graemlins/spade.gif in the BB.

Flop is K/images/graemlins/club.gif4/images/graemlins/diamond.gif2/images/graemlins/spade.gif. I bet. UTG raises. SB calls. I call. Turn is the 8/images/graemlins/spade.gif. I check. UTG bets. SB calls. I call.

River is the 5/images/graemlins/spade.gif. I check.

Bet. This scare card will be checked through too often with 2 side callers.

I'll do this every time unless I have seen villain check behind with tp on river.

Mildly scary perhaps, but it only completes runner-runner draws.

I think it's fine. Sure seems like UTG likes his K and didn't slow down on the turn OOP. I don't see why he wouldn't fire again on the river for value on an innocent rag like this.

I like it.

This is a great spot for a river check-raise. First off, your draw was a runner-runner, so it's not like the 3rd spade is exactly a scare card.

Secondly, the flop was as *drawless* as they come. Therefore, we can assume that UTG has at least a pair because of his flop raise. There's a good chance he'll bet again for apparent value on the river.

Thirdly, the presence of SB means that our check-raise profits are inflated when gets trapped in between. That is, when our check-raise attempt fails, we miss out on maybe 1-2 bets compared to if we simply bet the river. However, when our check-raise attempt works (UTG bets, SB calls, we raise....), we gain an extra two bets more than if we simply bet. (Again, because this board was rather drawless, it can usually be assumed that SB is not on a draw and will therefore call UTG's bet most of the time).

All in all, I'd say you succeed with your check-raise more than half the time here. Therefore, it's +EV.

this is read dependent. does utg always follow through on the river? is he a lag or even solid? these types of players are easy to checkraise. but if he is a loose passive chump (after limping utg that would be my read), i would go ahead and bet the river.

You mean there are actually people who don't do this?

I wanted to bet your last river post (with only button to act among three opponents and much different action on prior streets).

I go for the C/R here every friggin' time.

I'm in the checkraise crowd. That river isn't a complete brick, but it ain't very scary.
