With no reads I fold and keep an eye on him.

Let it go. Consider it a T80 tuition cost to keep him on your radar.

Also next time just limp preflop with 99 unless you are opening from the button. Or maybe the CO.

According to some of the very basic "How to Play $10 SnG" posts I've read, it's OK to move-in w/ JJ+ at this level.

Maybe. JJ is rather marginal, but is alright for a raise here, whereas 99 is far better to play for set value behind a limper.

Drop it like its hot.

And don't raise next time.

Okay, now the next question - Why are we folding?

What are most people pushing in these places? Overcards? High pairs?

More often than not, when we call, are we getting no better than a coinflip - and the times he has TT-AA outweigh the times he has 88-22, by a significant margin?

We don't want to take that coinflip this early, eh?

What if i had QQ? KK?

Where does the line become call?

Obviously not with anything unpaired...

Seriously, if you're asking this question, you need to read this forum a lot more. And please stop raising 99 behind a limper from the button at this level.

Completely anecdotal but standard move (not mine) at the $11s is for AA, AK, and KK to go all in early on with or without action ahead of them. Level1 always offers up someone who will call.

We are folding because we have absolutely no read on the reraiser, and so we have no idea what he has. He could be playing AA this way, or he could be playing 33 this way. We have no idea.

What we do know is that we will have plenty of opportunities in the next 50 odd hands to get chips in other ways, where we have a better idea of where we stand, and where we can force the action instead of calling an allin with absolutely no idea what we're doing or why we're doing it.

Thus, a fold.

If you had QQ or KK it is a call. It's an obvious call with KK, less so with QQ but still a call. In my opinion that is where the line is -- JJ I fold here. Unhappily.

I appreciate the verbose answer. I understand the logic behind it - its just hard to do. I'm sure that it being easy to do will come with time, either watching other people run 99 into highers pairs or from doing it myself.

For some reason I find that I play better as play nears the bubble and beyond. When I'm busting out, its early, on badly conceived pushes or calls of pushes.

What happened?

I called. He flipped KQo, my 99 stood up.

Live and learn.

Sit on your hands for the first couple of levels and watch 2-4 seats flame out. That'll give you a better chance to use your short-handed skills.

I'm basing the "i play better shorthanded" statement on a sample size that doesn't even warrant the word sample... so I'm not sure if that's necessarily even the case.

Heh.
