wacki is now a mod in "Science, Math, and Philosophy" and I'm remaining a mod in the WPT forum (despite the efforts of Mr. Lepore).

No it is not. That may be a possibility in the future; you never know. Based on the gigantic pain in the ass this forum has become for me, I anticipate that the moderators of this forum will not remain static. I want them to be anonymous for two reasons:

1) It allows them the freedom to say things "unmoderator like" when they are in posting mode.

2) It keeps people from prejudging their moderation decisions.

I've been pushing for more modding of OOT. The short and sweet explanation is that this website and forum represents the publishing business Two Plus Two Publishing, LLC, and therefore the content has to meet a certain level of respectability. In the past, OOT has crossed the line too much.

2+2 has some legal obligations with respect to regulating content, and beyond that we have to be able to direct potential business partners and customers to the website without reservation.

Few other businesses the size of 2+2 would be as permissive as we are with the forum. And we understand that the open nature of the forum has contributed significantly to its success. But we need to clean up the nastiest stuff a little bit.

I agree with Ed's point, we discussed it the other night. However, anonymous mods is a bad idea as several mods are known to have certain viewpoints. And as someone else noted, the politics forum particularly is way worse than OOT on a regular basis. This is really nothing more than a high school boys locker room. All it needs is someone to keep the language and porn clean and it's fine for the most part.

Odd, considering what you like as change, I was just about to say the same about you. When I first came to OOT it was populated with very smart and free thinkers that I learned from like Kurn Son of Mogh, Sam h, Adios, Zeno, elwoodblues, and andyfox. They corrected a lot of my opinions at the time and helped me realize the brilliance of our founding fathers. I wish they still posted here but they rarely do now.

I haven't read a lot of your posts, but the posts of yours that I have read have convinced me that my comparison to you and the "Red Internet" article I posted was very accurate.

The day that I'm not allowed to simply post a picture of a tiny violin (without any words) or call somebody a drama queen (like you would prefer) is the day 2+2 has lost all use for me. And that will be sad day IMO as I have learned a lot from this forum and I've met a large number of incredibly talented individuals. To be bluntly honest, people that think like you disgust me.

That being said, I totally understand 2+2's business interests and wish them the best of luck in their endeavors.

There is a difference between voicing controversial opinions and being innapropriate. I personally would prefer that some of the discussions, particularly on the Politics forum, not happen on 2+2. They can get very heated and partisan, and a lot of the discussion I find to be ignorant. Furthermore, I think some of those threads may turn off some potential posters. But, we have a policy of being generally permissive, and that is important to us.

But we have to have a modding system in place that will immediately remove stuff like kiddie porn (just a clear-cut example), and we need it sooner, rather than later. It may be inconsistent for a while and seem unfair... obviously that sucks. No one wants that. But we need it.

Looks like otis circumvented the language filter in the last post you linked.

As for the post Otis made about bigsteve. Steve clearly brought it on himself. I had lots of PMs with steve. Had steve just been a poster who was gay, he'd have had no problem. But since every post steve made was basically a trolling post, he kind of got what he asked for. You can't troll and complain when you get the response you are looking for. And like I said, I PM'd steve many times and was somewhat sympathetic to his situation.

I know this is supposed to be a thread about Otis, but I want to address the anonymity factor of the user mods in this forum.

In other forums it is my desire and intention for people to address moderation issues with those assigned to those forums (I am available in the case of no resolution). In OOT, I am taking full responsibility for moderation decisions. If there is action taken here that a poster feels to be unwarranted, I will be the one to address.

It is for this reason, as I state in the sticky, that posters should save a copy of anything they feel is questionable. In this way decisions can be reversed if necessary.

Now you can go back to the marsupial.

i don't know otis other than reading a few posts here and there, but i don't like when people get ganged up on for stupid reasons.

i have respect for otis though. even if i might not always agree i can usually understand where they are coming from. not many people defend women on this forum, i like having someone here who does. even though it's pretty useless.

as far as OOT being cleaned up, i don't really give it any thought. it doesn't affect me either way. there are definitely things i could do without, but i don't expect much from people either. when i read something that bothers me, it's more the realization of disappointment in people that upsets me, not the lack of censorship. i'm pretty tolerant, but that doesn't always make it right. excusing certain things as 'humor' doesn't mean it's acceptable, or funny, either. but that is for everyone to judge themselves, since everyone is going to have their own views on that.

i am just about as easily amused as you can get and i'm sure most people here that know me can realize i have a good sense of humor, i don't think that is the issue. however, humor to me, rarely involves ganging up on people and being mean to them for no real valid reason. but, that's me.

BigSteve felt harassed because he was gay. I believe he truly felt this and I believe he received more than his fair share of insults and jokes.

BigSteve decided to make his last post and leave OOT. A bunch of people chimed in making fun of him. Wacki posted the tiny violin.

Yes, I "notified moderator" of the violin post because I thought that it was particularly insulting coming from a moderator, the mods job is to make sure people don't get harassed and to clean up OOT.

I would not have notified Mat if the violin had come from a regular poster.

Normally, when someone says something I disapprove of I will just say so right there in the forum and start a debate. It is only when something is exceptionally objectionable that I will "notify moderators."

Anyway, Wacki proceeded to "out" me as a mod notifier (another action unbecoming of a mod, IMHO). Now everyone is blaming me for all the recent OOT changes.

I admit I have played a roll, but I am not the only one notifying mods and I'm not the only one offended by blatant sexism, homophobia, and excessive violence.

If you read all my posts, you will see that though I may be short-tempered, out-spoken, and have a low tolerance for offensive behavior, I do not run around playing tattle-tale.

And I do actually enjoy much of OOT.

This is an unfair comment that stems from AIDS' initial spread in north america. Though contraction is more likely with man-to-man sex, calling it a "gay disease" is wrong.

I thought this comment was offensive and I would consider myself pretty liberal when it comes to gay jokes/comments. I feel people, on average, would be a hell of a lot more offended by that comment than a picture of a violin.

They are capable of discussing any topic intelligently, humorously and regardless, making it interesting. There is a difference between voicing controversial opinions and being innapropriate. I personally would prefer that some of the discussions, particularly on the Politics forum, not happen on 2+2. They can get very heated and partisan, and a lot of the discussion I find to be ignorant. Furthermore, I think some of those threads may turn off some potential posters. But, we have a policy of being generally permissive, and that is important to us.

But we have to have a modding system in place that will immediately remove stuff like kiddie porn (just a clear-cut example), and we need it sooner, rather than later. It may be inconsistent for a while and seem unfair... obviously that sucks. No one wants that. But we need it.

Again, ed miller wrote that they were legally obliged to regulate content. If he was saying what you are implying, he would've wrote that they had the legal right. He obviously meant that 2+2 had some legal obligation to moderate the forums otherwise they [2+2] will get in legal trouble.

The case law on this issue is far from settled. But do a google search for "yahoo sued" and you'll see some of the stuff I'm referring to.
