The Liquor control board of ontario goes on strike at midnight tonight.

For you non-Ontarians what this means to me is that I cannot buy any liquor at all, only beer.

So unlike the old days when canadian rum runners kept american speakeasys stocked with booze we now need you to return the favour.

any volunteers? You could get pretty rich if this thing goes on for a while... /images/graemlins/grin.gif

You fuckers have [censored] liquor store labor unions? Wow.

07-26-2005, 06:36 PM
Damn this sucks. Hopefully it doesn't last too long. Time for the government to put the LCBO up for sale.

This would suck more if I wasn't 5 minutes from the Quebec border...

I do think we owe you guys for helping out during prohibition. However, it is probably illegal. My state shares a border w/ you guys- not Ontario but out west -, and I remember some Canadians being busted for filling a rental truck with booze from a state south of us and driving up to Canada. Apparently your prices are so bad they could fill a truck up at retail and make money. I was sad to see them charged, but they were. Oh well.

I think I may have to go get a bottle of Pinch for you tonight, the scotch that made the vile Joe Kennedy rich. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Of course it would be illegal but that shouldn't stop you doing it!!!

C'mon were talking about booze here and there's plenty of alcoholics in Ontario.

If you think about it you would really be helping needy people out and making boatloads (perhaps literally) of money at the same time.

Why do something illegal? It would be much easier to just get it from another province - and completely risk free.

Ontario is kind of huge. What if he's not near the border?

Doesn't look like he can be more than 16 hours round trip. 16 hours wouldn't stop me.

Mail?

Plus if it's anything on a large scale, like the OP implies, it certainly would be worth it for someone to load up a truck or something from Quebec/Manitoba.

I will be making a trip from near the Quebec border to the Toronto area in the next two weeks...

JERRY: (re-entering) Hey, you're not talking that Michigan deposit bottle scam again, are you?

NEWMAN: You tried it?

KRAMER: Oh yeah. Every which way. Couldn't crunch the numbers. It drove me crazy.

Those bastards. I'm getting married in 3 weeks, and we have to provide the booze. As if it's not bad enough they charge us an extra 11% tax because it's for a wedding, I have to find something to do with $500 worth of liqour for 3 weeks. And figure out how I'm going to pay rent.

Not only that - I'm out of scotch, and the wife didn't buy me more when she was there.

In Ontario, the government seems to think if liquor were available privately, we'd all be raging alcoholics. So, you can only buy hard liquor at government owned liquor stores - the LCBO. They also handle things like licensing for bars & private functions, etc. You can buy beer at the Beer Store (yes, that's what it's called) which is owned by Labatt's and Molson, and wine at privately owned wine stores. But that's all. Even restaurants and bars have to buy from the LCBO.

It sucks. I want to buy beer when I get my groceries, dammit!!! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, LCBO is the Liquor Control Board of Ontario and it is a government owned corporation. There's been rumours of privitization for awhile. We can also only buy beer at "The Beer Store" Its pretty lame. Quebecers and a few other provinces can buy beer in corner stores, gas stations etc, like you guys.

It's wierd in the US. I can walk into any drugstore, walmart, grocery store in Montana and buy vodka, wine, beer, whatever. But in Minnesota, you can only get liquor and wine in liquor stores. In fact the groceries and convenience stores that sell beer only offer swill called 3.2 beer. Basically watered down piss that has at most 3.2% alcohol. Virtually nobody drinks that crap. So the liquor store is about it, and of course they aren't open on Sundays and have very limited hours all other days of the week. They close by 8pm M-T, and 10pm on Fri and Sat.

Hey,

First, I have never heard of an extra charge for a wedding (11% is lots). How would they even find out what it was for?

Second, if this is correct, you should return all that booze to LCBO (they will accept it all back and give you a refund) and buy it again WITHOUT telling them what it is for (save that 11%).

Since we're reselling it, we need a liquor license. I'm too cheap to have an open bar, and my friends drink too damn much anyhow. Part of the rules of a liquor license for resale is you need to pay the 11% tax. We also need to show the receipt to the hall when we bring in the liquor, because they could lose their license if they didn't enforce that part.

So, the tax isn't really because it's for a wedding, it's because we're reselling.

On a positive note - there's not going to be a strike. The government caved, as expected.

So you are bitching because you are going to be Selling liquor at your wedding????

Ok I can understand not being able to afford an open bar at a wedding..I'm sure it gets quite expensive.. but arent you going to get your $$$ back if you are selling it????

Another thing to consider is people tend to give less at weddings with a cash bar than they do at ones w/ open bars

Success!!!

I made it to an LCBO on time before close and dropped a few hundred, mostly on vodka /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I didn't really get enough to be reselling to people though because of the uncertainty of how long this strike is going to last, if it turns out to be a long one I may have to start thinking about that 8 hour drive to Montreal I heard someone else suggesting.

I think it's more about profit and how much money the gov't makes from the LCBO that makes them keep a monopoly over the sales rather then some idea of looking after our health.

IF we sell everything we open, and have almost no half-bottles left over that we can't return, then we'll break even. I'm not bitching that they charge more - I'm bitching that they are charging me more tax. As if I don't pay enough already.

As for people not giving as much - I don't give a [censored]. Any more gd small appliances in my apartment, and I'm gonig to have to find somewhere else to live.
