View Full Version : What was the first 50 cent video game?

So, thinking back to my days at the Putt-Putt arcade, what was the first game that was fifty cents to play.

I'm not talking Outrun or one of those fancy "sit-in" flight simulator games, just the first stand-up arcade game that cost two quarters/tokens.

Was it Street Fighter, or something before that? Personally, I blame the fifty cent video game for the decline of American values.

And I loved Operation Wolf.

It might have been Dragon's Lair. That's just a guess.

Street fighter was the first one I saw that cost $.50.

It's gone down hill from there.

Street Fighter? No chance. Way before that. I remember paying .50 to play freakin' Galaga in Orlando. But probably for most it has to be that Dragon's Lair one. Remember it was SO revolutionary using some kind of laser disc player. Basically you had four direction options and a button. Pick the wrong one, dead, reinsert your quarters, try again.

I totally sucked at that game and never had enough money to figure it out.

I think the answer would depend on the arcade. I'm guessing the arcades set the prices.

However, Dragon's Lair was probably the first game that was consistently .50 from arcade to arcade.

Add me to the Dragon's Lair bandwagon.

Aside I) While the arcade version was pretty easy to learn through observation, I've found the DVD game to be pretty tough. I suspect it's a combination of my detereorating reflexes and the fact that the DVD player remote control isn't terribly responsive.

Aside II) For anyone in the South SF Bay Area, the arcade at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has a fine collection of older, working arcade games...Asteroids, Battlezone, Tempest, Pac Man, Robotron 2084...you can even play Pong!

Wrong as it is, Dragons Lair is a good answer.

But definately wrong.

The correct answer, and some will ding me saying it's not a video game, but the correct answer is...

A double-deck pinball machine

I'm not sure which one came first, but this is the right answer.

Yah - definitely not a video game. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

First one of these I can remember was Black Knight (Williams). Double deck and magna-save...thing must've cost a bundle back then.

I remember the first time I saw a game that cost more than $1 per play. I haven't been to the arcade since.

The only thing more offensive are the token machines that give you 3/$1.00
