Been a little while since we did this.

I heard Faith No More's version of War Pigs on the way home last night. It's a real kickass version that is true to the Sabbath original.

So post yer favorite cover songs here.

The Ataris version of Don Henleys' "Boys of Summer".

Also, about 10 years ago some band named 10,000 [censored] DJ's did a great cover of Sabbaths' Supernaut- not that that song could ever be improved upon but it was a cool take.

They are censoring the word h o m o? Jesus...

that reminds me of another alternative-like band (name unknown) doing a cover of Men at Work's "Urge Overkill" - I think Colin Hay joined in for the 3rd verse....

that was damned cool. - Actually, I THINK I bought the disk - should look for it...

Sparklehorse's version of Wish You Were Here and Jeff Beck's instrumental cover of Day in the Life are both really good.

Primus covers that I like:

Behind my camel (Police)
Intruder (Peter Gabriel)
Amos Moses (Jerry Reed) - I actually like the Primus version better.

Primus covers that I don't like:
The things that should not be (Metallica)
Scissor Man (XTC)
Have a Cigar (Pink Floyd)

Edit:
Faith No More also did a great cover of The Commodores' Easy, and a funny cover of the Dead Kennedys Let's Lynch the Landlord.

I liked their Have a Cigar.

I suppose it was mentioned before but the best cover of all time is Jimi Hendrix' All Along the Watchtower.

Tori Amos does hella good covers IMHO. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is a masterpiece the way she does it.

John Hiatt has had some good covers made of his tunes:
Buddy Guy-Feels Like Rain
Jeff Healey-Confidence Man, Angel Eyes
Bonnie Raitt-Thing Called Love
There's also a cover of a Hiatt tune called "Riding With The King," by Clapton and BB King, but I like Hiatt's better. The Clapton/King version's lyrics are changed to make it sound like they are talking about BB, but the song was originally about Elvis.

Bonnie Raitt also has a good cover of John Prine's Angel From Montgomery.

A3 (Alabama 3) has a good cover of Prine's "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" on their first record.

ZZ Top's I Thank You, originally by Sam And Dave, is a pretty good one. Not quite as good as the old Stax stuff.

Johnny Winter had a great version of "Stray Cat Blues" by the Stones.

Yeah Hiatt is an excellent songwriter and the list you put forth could be extended extensively. He's a genius and fun to see live as well.

Matter of fact, here's a list of Hiatt covers, both covers he's done of other people's stuff and his stuff that's been covered; I forgot he wrote, "Where Is The Next One Coming From?", which is on Buddy Guy's "Damn Right I Got The Blues" album and is a great tune.

I have a bootleg tape which has Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne doing "Across The Borderline", another great tune.

Out of that whole album of covers, this was the one you picked? I thought it was the worst. The cover of "Whiskey In The Jar" by Thin Lizzy blew it away, as did "Last Caress" by the Misfits (who also had a cool album covering 50's standards i.e "Great Balls of Fire.")

I remember hearing the Cash version on one of my local alternative rock stations and i thought "ooh this must be the original version or something, why else would they play johnny cash on this station?" Very interesting.

The Thin Lizzy version is pretty good, but really the best versions are Irish folk versions IMHO. The best of which is probably the Pogues and the Dubliners when they did it together. Clancy Brothers did it well too.

Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready (from Pearl Jam) covered Bob Dylan's "Masters of War" at the Dylan 30th anniversary concert in 1993. I think it's my favorite Dylan cover -- a powerful rendition of a powerful song.

I'm also a fan of Marvin Gaye's cover of "Heard It Through the Grapevine" and Aretha's cover of "Respect." They pretty much made people forget who did the originals (which are good in their own right).

Some great ones mentioned already, so I'll just try & stick with covers that haven't been mentioned yet:

Less Than Jake - Surrender (Cheap Trick)
Megadeth - No More Mr. Nice Guy (Alice Cooper)
Me First & the Gimme Gimmes - pretty much their entire catalog
Bloodhound Gang - It's Tricky (Run-DMC)
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics)
Love Spit Love - How Soon is Now? (Morrissey)
Shinedown - Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Nonpoint - In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins)
Quiet Riot - Cum on Feel the Noize (Slade)
Billy Idol - Mony Mony (Tommy James & the Shondelles)
Echo & the Bunnymen - People are Strange (The Doors)

Off the top of my head...

Also, someone mentioned any cover of "In Your Eyes"; SR-71 recorded a killer cover of this song as "Mitch Allen", but I haven't been able to find it anywhere (SR-71 is a local band, so it got heavy rotation on a local radio station for a while).
