they're cute, but i think their presence turns off some of the birds that want to come eat. any ideas?

This happened all the time at my parents' house. There have been multiple incidents with my mom stuck in the front yard with a bear between her and the house, not to mention broken birdfeeders and a large mess. They just now have finally gotten rid of the whole thing altogether.

I think if you put a large, plastic/plexiglass disk around the support pole, they won't be able to climb past it. The diameter has to be large enough so that they can't anchor on the pole with their back feet and reach the edge with their front feet.

If they're as smart as Chip & Dale (and you're as dumb as Donald Duck) you're screwed.

Put grease on the pole and they won't be able to climb up. Not nearly as fun as the BB gun but should be effective.

If they aren't paying the bird guild membership fees, then they're stealing. Shoot them.

Put a shield on the pole itself to prevent them from climbing- you might have to raise the pole, in case they're jumping up there.

It will make it easier to shoot them as well.

You could also train a cat to hunt them (or... train it to only hunt the chipmunks and not the birds). This could provide some gladiator-esque entertainment.

If you put the seed on the ground, they won't crawl up on the bird feeder.

train it to only hunt the chipmunks and not the birds

If you can accomplish this, you have a bright future in Tinseltown as an animal trainer.

Actually, chipmunks are much easier for a cat to catch and they don't have to be trained. We had lots of chipmunk holes in our yard. By sheer coincidence, we adopted a former farm tom-cat. Within a short time we have a drastic rise in the number of headless chipmunk bodies on the back patio.

The chipmunks will be at your door the next day.

1) the pole is the weakness. You can either grease it up, polish the crap out of it, or get rid of it. That feeder has to be a lot farther away than 1 foot from the nearest pole. Run a line from 2 trees or 2 poles and it will work.

Would prolly stop chipmunks - would still be child's play for a squirrel - unless squirrels are not an issue here.

Anyone ever see that documentary on squirrels and bird feeders? Amazing.
