What aspects of a computer game are you looking for?

The best computer game ever is Star Control 2, but it's very old and the graphics are obviously not up to par. Good graphics for when it was written but obviously we are long past those days.

Here is where you can find the ported version to modern operating systems:

http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

Maybe you can elaborate on genre you'd be most interested in and a general idea of your computer's era. These both narrow things down somewhat. Genra examples might include RPG, First person shooter, racing (cars, bikes, snowboards, whatever), strategy, arcade, etc.

Online with others or in a scripted game with NPCs?

I'm anxiously awaiting "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion."

TStokes

I think online with others would be fun but it really doesnt matter. I searched everquest in amazon and got about 40 different things which one should I be looking for?

This game rocks. You can play online with 16/32/64 people. I had never tried a 1st person shooter before (DOOM style game) but this one is fun.

Since you don't seem at all fazed by losing 5 years of your life, I can only assume that you will love EQ. Everquest 2 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00028YSD0/qid=1122150812/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_sbs_1/102-9164957-3131318?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846)

I assume EQ is still at the top of the MMORPG scene? I got out just before the release of 2.

I just got Guild Wars (http://pc.ign.com/articles/612/612079p1.html) last week and i like it alot.
Its an online RPG but a little different than everquest as when you do quests you dont have to have other people with you unless you choose to.

i didn't like Eq as much, it just got too repetitive and seemed more like a chore than fun. But damn was it addicting.
I'd recommend Guild Wars especially if you havn't played an MMORPG before.

Asheron's Call destroys both of those games.

If the OP wants to play the best computer game ever made, however, he should get a copy of Civilization (the current installment is III).

i'm long recovered.. but i did waste 2000-2003 playing that game. i can't imagine finding a game i liked as much either, nor would i want to since that's scary. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

everquest was awesome if you are willing to devote your life to a fantasy world (shh it doesn't happen by choice). that's really the only way you can fully experience it. no idea what it's like now though.

no more games for me, just poker.

My personal top five would go something like:

Fallout/ Fallout 2
Star Control II
Civilization III: Conquests
Ultima VII/ VII Part Two

But I'm old-school.

If you want a MMORPG then World of Warcraft is the best one out there right now.

Of course Ultima Online was and will always be the best MMORPG in history. But now it is really dated and I doubt a player just getting into it now would like it.

The best computer rpg's ever are the Fallouts and Baldur's Gates. When you play an rpg, you better be able to bang some hookers and kill everybody in the town afterwards. If you can't, you might as well be playing Tetris.

For me it's StarCraft (with the BW expansion pack) by far. The single player is fun but the battle.net experience is just incredible. At least it was for me. If you're starting out now it may not be very good because very few will be complete beginners.

Poker. I could play cs:source all day.

Also, if it's an RPG you're looking for, you might consider DLing an SNES emulator and play through some of the classics. Legend of Zelda, Chrono Trigger, and FFVI/3, to get you started.

you aint kiddin. OP, EQ has a nice feature that tells you exactly how many hours you've played with a character. When you get past 24 hours, it starts counting your play time in days. I quit 2 years ago... on my main character i had just over 200 days played. This was by no means extreme for high level players, i knew several people with more than twice that.

do you really want to get into a game like that? it can honestly change your life, and not for the better. if you already have an addictive personality (of course you do, or you wouldn't be here) you might want to think twice before buying this game.

Everquest was so good that I actually became a "guide" to be able to explore EVERY nook and cranny of the game, even thought being a guide stunk major arse!

The best games besides everquest are SUBSPACE (http://beginners.subspace.net/) and Operation Flashpoint (1985-themed cold war tactical). Subspace is free now acutally. I havent played it in YEARS and its still around. I force myself not to play it because i'd get sucked in again!

Never tried EverCrack, and I'm not sure that I want to after hearing all of these reports! MMORPG's are highly addicting.

If you want to try one for free, though, I occasionally play Maple Story (http://www.mapleglobal.com), but I have been playing Winning Eleven 8/NCAA 06 on PS2 and Battlefield 1942 (don't have the new one)/Maple Story for PC.
