View Full Version : Question about bankroll
When a book or website suggests that your bankroll be 100 x BB is that the amount that you should take to the table each time or just an amount reserved play in genral.
Just wondering.

That would just be a general amount for your bankroll. For a limit game, you should usually buy in for about 25 big bets.

Buy in: 25-50 BB - Doesnt really matter (rebuy if you go below 12BB just in case you need to cap every street!)
Bankroll: 300-400BB - keep aside so you can lose a few 25BB buy-ins without going bust. (some say 500BB+)

I don't know where the 100 BB recommendation comes from but you can calculate a desired bankroll size using the following equation (from this BruceZ post (http://archiveserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=207170&page=&view=&sb =5&o=&vc=1) ):
[ QUOTE ]
B = -(sigma^2/2u)ln(r)
.
where u is your hourly rate
sigma is your hourly standard deviation
r is your desired risk of ruin
B is your bankroll
[/ QUOTE ]
Just to put in some numbers, if your standard deviation is 12 BB/hr, your win rate is 1 BB/hr, and you want to have no more than a 1% risk of going broke, you would need a bankroll of ~332 BB.
Edit: your win rate would have to be 3.3 BB/hr (wow) to be able to make due with a 100 BB bankroll, assuming the other numbers don't change.

I'd like to point out that a standard deviation of 12 is about normal for a winrate calculated in BB/hr, but if you were using BB/100 as many do with online poker, your standard deviation is probably more like 16.

That's about right, for limit HE. The same equation applies, so long as consistent units* are used. For r=.01, std dev=16 BB/100, B=100 BB, your winrate would have to be 5.9 BB/100.
*The units of standard deviation are not actually BB/hr or BB/100 hands, but that's how they're expressed in PokerTracker and quoted on these forums.

So in other words, bankroll of ~300BB is about right?
For a bankroll, the bigger the better. I go 500BB...but I play NL, so I expect some more variance.
On a side note, I haven't really experienced much variance. I love live 1-2 NL in AC!!!!

NL variance is generally lower than limit variance. Apropos nothing, really, just through it should be mentioned.
