I owned a condo for 6 years, and I now own a house.

There is definitely something to be said for a back yard.

If nothing else we can say that a backyard is actually land, whereas a condo is just a depreciating asset.

depreciate in northern VA, definately not, the market is redonkulous nothing depreciates.

the market is redonkulous. it won't remain that way forever. the fact is that land is land and tends to appreciate. when you buy a condo, you don't own land. a building depreciates over time. markets come and go, but buildings don't last forever. Although, I admit in some places the type of condo buildings are built to last longer than others. But in most places, NYC being an exception for instance, condos have been a poor long-term investment.

Condo fees are rather high. You might want to find out why.

I just sold a condo with similar fees, and they were that high due to large number of costly repairs (new roofs, sewage line upgrades, costly electrical issues, etc.)
