Should get the drift from the first paragraph or two. What next? Maybe PETA will start butchering hundreds of animals, rainforests will be cut down by those trying to protect it, and on and on. This guy is such a moron.

Gushing Faucet Could Land Artist in Court

By SARAH BLASKOVICH

Mark McGowan went into the tiny backroom kitchen of a south London gallery three weeks ago and flipped on the cold water. He didn't turn it off, and doesn't plan to for an entire year.

"The Running Tap," as it's called, is McGowan's effort to protest against wasted water in London by blatantly letting it go down the drain.

"When you've got the tap on at home, you don't think about it. That's why this is art, because it makes people consider it," the environmentalist said.

The gushing faucet is an expensive exhibition that could waste about 3.9 million gallons of water. It could also land McGowan in a legal battle with Thames Water, the utility company. The circular sink has already swallowed about 193,000 gallons of water during a season declared the driest in London since 1976.

The project has outraged Thames Water, which said it could cost about $23,320 if the faucet runs for 365 days. The water company pleaded with McGowan to close the tap, but in vain.

"I think he certainly made a point," said Thames Water Spokeswoman Hilary Bennett. "We understand where he's coming from and we're sympathetic to that. However, he should turn it off now."

After two angry Londoners shut the tap off, McGowan turned it back on.

"If you're going to waste some water, you might as well waste it for a year," McGowan said. "It's always good to complete projects."

The biggest threat to McGowan's flowing form of art is a pipe ban, expected to be issued in August, which could force him and other Londoners to keep their taps turned off.

If necessary, Thames Water will prosecute McGowan under the Water Industry Act of 1991 for belligerently wasting the liquid. Thames Water isn't sure, however, exactly how to go about it.

"The legislation wasn't designed with this situation in mind," said Chris Shipway, Thames Water spokesman. "We're investigating the legal options and looking at what actions we can take against him."

McGowan previously participated in equally audacious exhibitions including sitting in a bathtub of baked beans with french fries in his nose to support the full English breakfast, and pushing a nut with his nose for seven miles to protest student debt.

The House Gallery is currently responsible for paying the water bill and has stood behind McGowan's artistic endeavors. Even so, they can't afford to pay for the tiny cascade that wastes about 9,200 gallons a day.

"The gallery probably couldn't foot the bill for an entire year," said volunteer Sarah McIntyre. "We're sort of taking a risk, because we're pretty poor."

McGowan said he hopes for a flood of donations to help keep the faucet flowing, but until then, the gallery is nervously awaiting the monthly bill.

"If it wasn't so serious, my art would be hysterical. But it's not, is it?" McGowan said of the grave consequences of wasting the precious liquid. "I think it's one of my best pieces because it's so simple."

The silver sink is the same basin that gallery volunteers use to make tea or wash a plate. The dish soap still sits nearby, ready for an after-lunch cleanup.

But just in case anyone forgets, a hand scrawled note taped just above the sink reads: "If you find the tap off please could you turn it on and leave it running. Thanks."

I believe the correct spelling is "moran."

Wow this guy is pretty lame. Would it be irony if he drowned somewhere?

This is stupid. They can't pay the bill but they're doing it anyway. What happens when the water sompany shuts off their water after the first month for nonpayment?

NORFOLK, Va., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- As two People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) employees are arraigned on 31 felony animal- cruelty charges for allegedly dumping seven dead puppies and 11 other animals in a dumpster and driving a PETA-owned van containing another 13 animal bodies, the Center for Consumer Freedom highlights alarming official records from the state of Virginia showing that PETA has put over 10,000 dogs and cats to death since 1998.

The documents, available at http://www.petakillsanimals.com/, reveal that in 2003 PETA euthanized over 85 percent of the animals it took in, finding adoptive homes for just 14 percent. By comparison, the Norfolk SPCA found adoptive homes for 73 percent of its animals and the Virginia Beach SPCA adopted out 66 percent. PETA's required report documenting its 2004 record is currently four weeks late.

While PETA has claimed that most of the animals it kills are "broken beings," the dead animals discovered by North Carolina police included a female cat and -- according to a local veterinarian -- her two "very adoptable" kittens. "These were just kittens we were trying to find homes for," he told PETA's hometown Virginian-Pilot. "PETA said they would do that, but these cats never made it out of the county."

Last night WAVY-TV's coverage in Norfolk included heartbreaking details of a property manager whose dumpster became an impromptu pet cemetery. "They just slung the doors (open) and started throwing dogs ... beautiful cats. I saw a (dead) beagle last week that was pregnant ... last week it was 23 or 24 dogs ... it's happened to us nine times ... they disposed of the dogs in 30 seconds."

Authorities told WNCT-TV in Greenville, NC that they've discovered more than 70 dead animals in the last month that may be connected to PETA. WKTR-TV reported today that Cook and Hinkle are out on bond, "thanks to the President of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals."

And in a story that eerily resembles the current charges facing PETA's employees, the Associated Press reported on April 8 that an additional 150 euthanized dogs were found in rural Virginia, apparently dumped in trash bags near a riverbank. The Scott County, Virginia Sheriff is investigating.

"If the criminal evidence from the last 24 hours is in any way representative of PETA's large-scale is euthanasia program, countless adoptable animals may have been unnecessarily killed and inhumanely dumped," said Center for Consumer Freedom Research Director David Martosko. "PETA's animal program should be shut down immediately while a full criminal investigation can take place. Americans should think twice before supporting PETA's unethical programs."

The Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit coalition supported by restaurants, food companies, and consumers, working together to promote personal responsibility and protect consumer choices.

This idea is fine if done correctly; for instance, I plan on protesting the utter disrespect, chauvinism, and abuse of women in pornography by having sex with a bunch of porn stars.

I didn't read the whole article but most houses in London don't have a water meter, you just pay a flat fee.

Great, the Postmodern Vandal (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/4454485.stm) strikes again in the name of art.
