I don't understand how this is confusing at all. The objects in the mirror are in fact closer than they appear to be. Basically, it's because the mirror is curved to give you a better view.

The mirrors are slighly convex which produce a smaller image but your eye can't really tell how convex the mirror is so it just asumes that if the image is small it must be far away

I don't understand what's confusing about it. Objects are closer than they appear. What's confusing about that?
