Maybe, I should have just checked the turn for a free card, but otherwise?

Villain's flop play is suspicious, but you still can bet the turn unless you know him well. Checking is fine too - really doesn't matter much IMO.

I figured he was trying to steal my blind with a marginal hand. When he didn't bet the flop and/or ck/raise it and didn't bet out on the turn, I figured a good chance I was head the whole way.
