Just got back from a trip to Vegas. One of the highlights was definitely the game of HORSE at the MGM last night (Friday). Mad props to everyone in the game, especially the two guys who started the interest list and convinced me to get on it. I know chances are extremely slight that any of them are actually reading this, but if you are, just know that you made my day and I thank you /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm actually more local to AC (~2.5hr drive from Baltimore). I read a recent thread about trying to get a HORSE game going there somewhere -- if anyone has plans of this in the future please PM me, even if it is last minute I will seriously consider making the drive in for it because I haven't had that much fun playing poker with strangers in like ever.

3/6

which means that for stud, the bring-in is $1 and complete is $3, right? because we actually weren't sure about this, the dealer didn't know either, but that's what we drunk kids decided!

A $1 bring-in is pretty normal for 3/6, at least in my experience. What were you doing for antes?

If MGM spread this game regularly (up to 5-10), I would never play anywhere else in Vegas when I came. That says a lot of nice things about the management of that room that they'd spread a low-limit HORSE game for some folks.

I thought he was talking about that quarter mechanical horse game. What is this horse low limit poker about?

It's technically H.O.R.S.E. (i.e. hold'em, omaha/8, razz, stud and stud Eight or better).

I kind of figured it'd be a $1 ante. I'll compare that to the Party 3/6 game (which I believe most people consider a pretty good structure).

Party: 25 cent ante, 1 bring-in, $3 in total to start 8 handed

MGM: $1 ante, 1 bring-in, $9 in total to start 8 handed

So, tight play is absolutely punished in this game. You should be seeing 4th street a lot more often in this game than in a normally structured game.

I'm the guy who suggested a 2+2 HORSE game at the Showboat. It never came together, but the dream lives on. Those new rooms in AC are hurting for action and would be a better bet (but not a sure one) than Borgata or Taj.

I played in the original HORSE game (I think) at MGM. It was 2 weeks before the 2+2 donkfest. Dicelumpy can confirm this. The first night (Thursday, 6/2/05 I think) we played upstairs, and the stakes were set at 2/4, with a $1 ante. Structure was bad, but we all knew each other and didn't care. FeliciaLee, of Razz fame, was there with us. Eventually, two tables of 2/4 HORSE were going, one upstairs and one down.

The next night, Friday 6/3, or maybe Sat 6/4, we had a 3/6 HORSE game going with several off duty dealers. We changed the structure on the fly, which was cool. We started the stud rounds with $1 antes, but decided that was bad, and got a bunch of 50 cent pieces to use instead. Much better. It was essentially dealers' choice, since we didn't go exactly by the HORSE rotation. I chose razz every chance I got.

The MGM management rules for being so player-friendly and flexible. I do wonder how they can turn a profit with so many people on staff, however. I think they could get by if they eliminated 50% of the staff on hand at any time. Chip runners are nice, but I'm used to getting my own, etc. I love the room and will def. be back for some HORSE. If anything along these lines gets going in AC, I'm in.

Thanks for this post. I just told a boat load of fellow poker addicts that HORSE is going to be played more often in the big B+M's. The MGM small limit game is a good start. The reaction on the party boat was interesting. Half of the players were very enthusiastic about getting the chance to play multiple games in one sitting while the others looked miffed. It took me a moment to realize that half of the people had no freakin idea what I was talking about. Even Omaha, which has a fairly good following online, was a mystery. Stud 8 and Razz? Fergetaboutit.

I hope people learn more games and encourage casinos to mix it up a bit. It's good for the overall business and very good for improving our poker skills. I spent a day jumping from Hold'em to Stud to Omaha 8 at the Mirage last time I was there, which was fun, but having a HORSE game would be much better. I hope they spread them up to 10-20.

We had the HORSE game again tonight ($3-6)...lasted quite a while, too. I'm glad that we have the management staff that we do at the MGM. Gary and Mary (yeah, Im a poet...blah blah blah) would spread Old Maid if it could be raked somehow... I like it for the reason that its fun to deal something other than hold'em for a change... The tourists only want to play 2-4 limit and 1-2nl hold'em, so the HORSE game (along with crazy pineapple, which has gone a few times), is always welcome...

I played in this game, and it was indeed a blast. I played in it on saturday too. We had them bring out half dollars for the ante in the stud games, and I think that structure is better. A $1 ante was fun, but is definately too big.

The MGM room has become absolutely phenomenal. The dealers are universally excellent, and the management was nearly always extremely accomodating when I asked about starting a new game or lowering the rake when shorthanded. Today they even lowered the rake to $1 max for a 3 handed game despite the "official policy" being not to lower the rake below $2. I highly encourage everyone to play there when in Vegas.

sweet, which one were you? i was the asian kid with the michigan hat, and then my gf came over and put that ridiculously huge pink wizard hat on me. i was only in the game for the first hour or so... had to catch a plane /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

i agree that the MGM is excellent. i did have trouble with one dealer -- he mucked my cards when i had called; my fault for not protecting them, but he then gave me attitude for it when i hadn't even said a word of protest. he also screwed up a hand with my gf too. however, the management was very kind when we talked to them about it, and overall we had a great time there; the room is fantastic and MOST of the dealers are above what i have seen at any other casino.

one final thing -- i am planning to go to atlantic city this saturday (7/23). HORSE anyone??

Good effing luck getting the tightasses in AC to spread HORSE. The Borgata certainly won't do it. Doesn't matter how many open tables they have, either. I do see 40-80 HOE on their interest list sometimes, but it never goes. Could be that one of the newer rooms (Caesars, Showboat) would do the HORSE game since they're so desperate for action. Even then, the AC gaming commission (ACC? ICC? Whatever) has rules and regs that do handcuff the cardrooms somewhat.

Oh, and Crazy Pineapple pwns. That and double flop hold'em. I gotta get both going next time I'm at the MGM.

Yeah, I remember maybe one dealer who was below average. But the overall dealer quality there blows away nearly every casino I've played at.
