A well deserved win after a grueling 13 hour final table, playing solidly throughout, and shortstacked most of the way.

Congrats!

Let me just be the first to say thank GOD Dannenman did not win. With the 40/60 beat he put on Matusow, the 20/80 beat he put on Black, and the general demeanor of a guy who's like "Hey, I shouldn't be here" is not right for a world poker champion and ambassador of the game.

It's great that a pro like Hachem could make it through, especially from his chip position at the beginning. Personally I'm glad a guy like him took it home, though I would have been just as content to see Black or Tex to win.

Congrats to Hachem. Oh, and further proof that 73 suited rules. My favorite hand is 63s, so it's close enough.

Correct, I came across as making a general statement.

However, Dannenman made some incredibly stupid plays and Kanter's K5 hand was possbly the worst played hand of the year, or at least a frontrunner of a nominee...

There have been pictures of some of the WPT events where you can see that corners of the inner bills are dollar bills, with hundreds on the top and bottom. I have never heard one way or the other about what the WSOP does. Off the top of my head, I would guess that in the past it would be real money. Until recently, it was not a relatively huge sum like it has been the last few years. Also, I can't see Benny or Jack Binion screwing around with phony money stacks. I think a big corporation like Harrah's would be more likely to go with phony stacks, but they might do anything for publicity.

Also pure speculation: I would guess those guns are for show. Short barreled shotguns are not the professional weapon of choice in a very crowded room full of supposedly innocent people. I'm sure the real security is much less obvious.

Keep in mind that a big corporation runs Binion's now, and I doubt they would approve of leaving that much cash sitting out there.

Tim, I think you misread the situation. Casinos are in a cash ready business. It is impressive having the money there, the cost and risk of having it there is small compared to the publicity it receives. They know it is not likely the winner will demand the cash, but why not have it handy? They have had more than a week to clear any checks that people may have used to make their buy-ins for this tournament.

Big corporations understand the value of such marketing, they would be fools not to put the money out there.

From CardPlayer:

"Right now Benny’s Bullpen has just been recharged after millions upon millions of dollars were just brought out along with the WSOP championship bracelet. The money is piled about two feet high, bundled up in $10,000 wads of $100 bills, and covers and entire poker table, With so many Benjamin’s in the room, the smell of money is pungent and the players seem to be electrified. “If that don’t get your blood pumping, nothing will,” says Johnny Grooms. The two security guards flanking the cash with double pump shotguns give Binion's a old wild west feel. Poker, cash and guns. Late night for the last time at Binion's baby!"

No, it isn't. So I was all the more surprised (my first ever visit to LV last fall) to find that the then-Horseshoe had done away with its "See a million dollars!" exhibit that I remember reading about as a kid. Not that it ruined my stay in Vegas or anything, but it sorta drove home how cheap and tone-deaf to tradition the Binion heirs are.

Right. Becky Binion ran the place into the ground. They could not even make the payroll when Harrah's bought them. She sold the bills in the exhibit to collectors. The bills were worth quite a bit more than face value. I loved that million dollar horseshoe, it was my only reason to go downtown.
